READING
Read the following passage and decide whether these sentences are true or false.
Issues in big cities
These days, more and more people prefer urban life because of all the opportunities it
brings about, namely job opportunity, recreational facilities, decent education and high standard
of living. However, once they settle down in a city, they have to face up to more than one
problem.
To begin with, the life in the urban city is also very stressful and busy. City dwellers
often have a hectic pace of life, which means that they rarely have enough time for recreational
activities. People have to work hard and compete fiercely to earn a decent living, which puts
people under a lot of pressure. Moreover, working hard and extra working hours mean that urban
residents have very short time for their family and friends. Many people have complained that

thuvienhoclieu.com Trang 3
thuvienhoclieu.com
parents in the cities do not pay much attention to their children and people tend to talk less to
each other.
Furthermore, people have to put up with heavy pollution in the city. There are many
kinds of pollution such as air, water, land, noise and even light pollution. This is understandable
because there are numerous pollutants in the city. For example, exhaust fumes from vehicles or
emissions from factories are the main causes of air pollution. Pollution is detrimental to human
health. It can create some incurable diseases for people such as lung cancer when we inhale too
much fume and dusk.
Another serious problem is unemployment, while many people move to the city with
hope of find a job, their dreams turn sour due to the competitive job market. In the city the
demand for the quality of workforce is getting higher and higher. Poorly-trained workers from
rural areas may become jobless in the city.
In conclusion, should people want to move from the countryside to the urban areas, they
have to consider all the advantages and disadvantages before making up their mind.
Statements True False
31. There are more opportunities for people living in the urban areas than in
the countryside.
32. Although people in the city are busy, they can always have time for
entertainment activities.
33. People don’t have to suffer from heavy pollution in the city.
34. Urban residents don’t have much time for their family and friends.
35. The competitive job market in the city causes difficulties for workers with
low quality to find a job.
Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D to indicate the correct answer
to each of the questions.
SIMPLE WAYS TO LOSE WEIGHT ON A BUDGET
Plan to Cook at home
Instead of buying costly prepared meals, which often tend to be high in calories, cook
your own at home. Plan out our meals with high-fiber foods like beans and whole grains which
will keep you full and are a cheaper, healthier alternative to rich proteins and more processed
grains.
Eat less

thuvienhoclieu.com Trang 4
thuvienhoclieu.com
Eating less leads to weight loss, and cost savings, especially if you cut down on the right
things. Start by cutting your portions of spicy meat and poultry. Or swap out meat and poultry
for cheaper vegetarian proteins like beans, lentils, tofu, and eggs for some of your meals.
Double Up on Vegetables
Vegetables are great for weight loss, as well as all-around health. They are low in calories
and high in water and fiber - two things that keep you feeling full. Save cash by shopping for
those that are in season. Frozen vegetables can be a great bargain, with just as much nutrition as
fresh since they are picked and frozen at their peak ripeness.
Get creative with your exercise options
You don’t need to shell out a monthly gym fee to get moving. Instead, find fun activities
you enjoy for free. If you’re just getting started with a regular exercise routine, try beginning
with daily walks: start slowly and build up time and speed.
Make friends with someone
One of the most powerful resources you have for helping you lose weight is your social
network. Find a friend who is also trying to lose weight and agree to help each other stay
motivated. One study found that when friends participated in a group weight-loss programme
together, they lost more weight than people who did the same programme on their own.
36. The advantage of cooking at home is __________.
A. to plan out your costly prepared meals
B. to choose foods that keep you full and are cheaper
C. to enjoy a variety of rich proteins and more processed grains

__________.
