1. EPHEMERIS ( PANCHANGA )

GY
It is imperative for a student of astrology to understand

LO
Ephemeris (Panchanga) which means five constituents (Paanch Anga)

RO
.These five constituents are Lunar Day (Tithi) , Constellation
(Nakshatra) , Combination (Yoga) , Karana and Days (Vaar)

A ST
Lunar Day ( Tithi )
IC
The first constituent of the Hindu Ephemeris (Panchanga) is
ED
Lunar Day (Tithi). One Lunar Day denotes one phase of the Moon.
FV

Lunar Day is the distance between the Sun and the Moon. The period
from one day after No Moon to Full Moon is termed as Bright Half
O

(Shukla Paksha). The period from first day after Full Moon to No
GE

Moon is considered Dark Half (Krishna Paksha). The Bright Half

LE

starts from No Moon where Moon wanes to the Full Moon while in
OL

the Dark Half the Moon waxes from Full Moon to No Moon.
Thus the absence of the Moon is No Moon and the completion
C

of its phases is Full Moon. Tithis denote the distance of the Sun and
HI

the Moon at a given time.

RS

Earth revolves round the Sun and Moon revolves round the
HA

Earth. During this Moon and Sun may make an angle with respect to
MA

each other. When they make an angle of 00 , it is No Moon and

when they make an angle of 180 it is Full Moon. At the time of No
{3}
MAHARSHI COLLEGE OF VEDIC ASTROLOGY
THE HARMONY OF SPACE & ELEGANCE

Both Sun and Moon are at same position in respect to each

GY
other due to this Moon cannot be visible. Similarly when they are 180
apart , Full Moon can be seen so it is called as Full Moon day.

LO
It means that they are opposite each other. This results in receiving

RO
rays of moon to its fullest.

ST
Thus a month i.e. the time between two Full Moon is a period 30
days. Both Full Moon and No Moon come once each during a month.

One Synodic or Lunar Month comprises of 30 Lunar Days

GY
which sometimes reduces. The same holds good for the year as well.
Twelve lunar month make one year. Although there are twelve months

LO
in an year, but there is a difference between the days of lunar year

RO
and solar year. Moon takes 354 days to complete 12 revolution of

ST
the Earth while Earth makes one revolution of Sun in 365 ¼ days.
Thus there are 11 short days shorter in a lunar year than a solar year.

A
The system of adjusting this difference is devised through extra
IC
month which in Hindi is termed Malmassa or Purshottama month.
ED
This extra month is added to reconcile reduced days of lunar Year
FV

with the solar year.

O

Reduced Tithi
GE

A Tithi ( lunar day ) is considered to begin at Sunrise. The tithi

LE

that started at Sunrise shall be the tithi of that particular day. No

OL

matter if just one hour after Sunrise the tithi gets changed. Similarly
suppose changed tithi begins after Sunrise and ends before Sunrise
C
HI

of next day, then that tithi is not counted and it gets reduced. For
example, on a particular day if the Sun rises in third tithi and after day
RS

two hour it gets changed to fourth tithi and the fourth tithi ends
HA

before Sunrise next day and the next Sunrise occurs on the tithi then
MA

fourth tithi has not witnessed any Sunrise and it will be considered as
reduced tithi.
{6}
MAHARSHI COLLEGE OF VEDIC ASTROLOGY
THE HARMONY OF SPACE & ELEGANCE

Increased Tithi

GY
Any tithi which witnesses two Sun rises, is considered to be
increased Tithi. Suppose, the Sun rises on the tenth tithi and the same

LO
tithi continues till the next Sunrise, the tenth day will be considered

RO
increased tithi and shall occur subsequently twice in that month.

ST
Fusion of Tithi

A
Some times No Moon and Full Moon gets fused with the 14th

IC
day of the fortnight. Similarly at times the first lunar day may also
ED
fuse with the Full Moon day or No Moon day. When this happens it
FV

is called fusion of tithi.

The combined occurrence of No Moon day with the 14th lunar
O

day is called Sini No Moon day. The occurrence of Full Moon day
GE

with the 14th day is called Anumatee. When the first tithi combines
LE

with No Moon day it is called Koohoo and when first tithi combines
OL

with Full Moon day, it is called Raka.

Tithi denoted by numbers. Each tithi including No Moon day
C

and Full Moon day are assigned particular numbers. Thus each tithi
HI

is assigned a number when it is occurs. Thus first tithi is assigned

RS

number 1, second tithi as number 2, third 3 and so on till 15th tithi i.e.
HA

the Full Moon day which is denoted as number 15. In the same
MA

manner the 15th day of the dark half i.e. No Moon day is denoted by
number 30.

GY
Planets are the celestial bodies moving in the space. Planets

LO
does not have light of their own. They reflect the light of the Sun.

RO
Thus Sun is a star around whom different planets revolve. Our Earth
is also a planet which revolves around the Sun. Sun is the center of

ST
all planets around which different celestial bodies revolve. Sun, being

A
luminary, provides energy and light to other planets and influences

IC
them accordingly. Sun with planets that revolve round Sun are jointly
ED
called as solar system.
FV

The Sun seems to be rising in the East every day and setting in
the West every evening. It gives an illusion of revolving around the
O

Earth, but in reality Earth traverses from West to East. But from
GE

Earth it seems that Sun rises and sets. However in reality Sun is
LE

stationary but due to Earth’s movement this phenomenon occurs.

OL

For the convenience of astrological calculation the Earth is assumed

to be stationary while the Sun is assumed to be moving. Astrological
C

calculations become smooth by considering Sun as moving and Earth

HI

as stationary. Thus during calculations Sun is considered as a planet

RS

instead of Earth.

Exalted and Debilitated Positions

GY
Every planet has a specific position where it becomes more

ED
lesser degree than its own zodiac sign. Planets when situated in neutral
FV

inauspicious results. Planets in debilitated zodiac sign is extremely

GE

There is a particular degree of the planet in the horoscope which

LE

1. Rotation
LE

When a planet complete one rotation on its axis it is called as

rotation. Like Earth takes 24 hours to rotate in its axis.

2. Revolution
C

When a planet revolves around Sun, it is called revolution. Like,

HI

Earth takes 365 ¼ days to complete one revolution of Sun.

RS

There are two types of Revolution –

HA

1. Directional
MA

When planets travels in their path in a particular said directions

then it is called as directional movement. Directional movement is
{ 94 }
MAHARSHI COLLEGE OF VEDIC ASTROLOGY
THE HARMONY OF SPACE & ELEGANCE

always from West to East in accordance with Sun.

GY
For example, When a planet is situated in Virgo zodiac sign, in
will enter into Libra and then Scorpio and so on. This movement is

LO
the directional movement.

RO
2. Retrograde

ST
When planets travel in direction opposite to their usual traveling

A
direction than it is called as retrograding. Retrograde is always from

IC
East to West i.e. opposite to that of Sun. During retrogation, speed
ED
of planets is faster than usual speed. When a planet reaches at a far
FV

distance from Sun then the gravitational pull of the Sun becomes
weaker. This causes planets to reverse their direction and move
O

backward on their paths with great speed. Therefore retrograding

GE

speed is faster than directional speed.

LE
OL

For example, a planet is Pisces zodiac sign would move towards

Aquarius zodiac sign during retrograding instead of Aries zodiac sign.
C
HI

Speed of Planet
RS

All planets revolve round the Sun. Each planet has their own

more time. The zodiac is imagined to be divided into different signs.
{ 95 }
MAHARSHI COLLEGE OF VEDIC ASTROLOGY

Planets travel in their orbit and pass through from each zodiac sign

GY
to another. They traverse as follows: -
Sun

LO
Though Sun is stationary and Earth revolves round the Sun, but

RO
Sun is considered to be moving instead of Earth for convenience.
Earth revolves round the Sun in 365 ¼ days but for convenience it is

ST
taken as Sun takes 365 ¼ days to complete one revolution of Earth.

A
Sun crosses one zodiac sign in one month. Every day Sun traverses

IC

called as Solstice. Like when Sun crosses from Sagittarius zodiac
FV

Moon
O

Moon traverses very fast. It takes 30 days for Moon to complete

Mars
OL

Mars takes 45 days to traverse through one zodiac sign. It takes

eighteen months to complete one revolution of Sun.

Venus

GY
Venus dwells on one zodiac sign for approximate one month
and takes about one year to complete one revolution of Sun.

LO
Saturn

RO
Saturn traverses with a very slow speed. It takes 2 ½ years to
move through one zodiac sign. It takes approximately 30 years to

A
Rahu- Ketu

IC
Rahu and Ketu always maintain a distance of 180 degree and 6

FV

and take 18 months to move through one sign. Thus in all they take
18 years for their revolution.

Rising and Setting of Planets

LE

Rising of planets means being luminous and visible. Setting of

OL

planets would lose its luminosity and visibility. There are two reasons
for rising and setting of planets.
C
HI

1. Routine Rising and Setting

RS

Planets keep rising and setting. For example the planets which
HA

move slower than Sun like Mars, Jupiter , Saturn set is West when
MA

they move farther away from their own degree. Mercury and Venus
keep setting and rising in west and East direction.
{ 97 }
MAHARSHI COLLEGE OF VEDIC ASTROLOGY

2. On being close to Sun

GY
When a planet gets closer to Sun. It loses its visibility in the
brilliance of Sun. Having set they no longer radiate. They are said to

LO
be combusted on the following degrees close to Sun.

RO

Mercury 14 Degree
Jupiter IC 11 Degree

Venus 10 Degree

GE
LE

A combusted planet gives malefic results. A rising planet would

OL

give auspicious results.

When Moon comes within 1 Degree from the Sun, Moon gets
C

combusted. This phenomenon happens every month on No Moon

HI

day. On No Moon day, Moon is powerless and does not reflect.

RS

Rahu and Ketu do not get combusted. When they are close to
HA

Sun they intrude with Sun’s influences. Hence it is called eclipse.
