1. EPHEMERIS ( PANCHANGA )
GY
It is imperative for a student of astrology to understand
LO
Ephemeris (Panchanga) which means five constituents (Paanch Anga)
RO
.These five constituents are Lunar Day (Tithi) , Constellation
(Nakshatra) , Combination (Yoga) , Karana and Days (Vaar)
A ST
Lunar Day ( Tithi )
IC
The first constituent of the Hindu Ephemeris (Panchanga) is
ED
Lunar Day (Tithi). One Lunar Day denotes one phase of the Moon.
FV
Lunar Day is the distance between the Sun and the Moon. The period
from one day after No Moon to Full Moon is termed as Bright Half
O
(Shukla Paksha). The period from first day after Full Moon to No
GE
starts from No Moon where Moon wanes to the Full Moon while in
OL
the Dark Half the Moon waxes from Full Moon to No Moon.
Thus the absence of the Moon is No Moon and the completion
C
of its phases is Full Moon. Tithis denote the distance of the Sun and
HI
Earth revolves round the Sun and Moon revolves round the
HA
Earth. During this Moon and Sun may make an angle with respect to
MA
GY
other due to this Moon cannot be visible. Similarly when they are 180
apart , Full Moon can be seen so it is called as Full Moon day.
LO
It means that they are opposite each other. This results in receiving
RO
rays of moon to its fullest.
ST
Thus a month i.e. the time between two Full Moon is a period 30
days. Both Full Moon and No Moon come once each during a month.

which sometimes reduces. The same holds good for the year as well.
Twelve lunar month make one year. Although there are twelve months
LO
in an year, but there is a difference between the days of lunar year
RO
and solar year. Moon takes 354 days to complete 12 revolution of
ST
the Earth while Earth makes one revolution of Sun in 365 ¼ days.
Thus there are 11 short days shorter in a lunar year than a solar year.
A
The system of adjusting this difference is devised through extra
IC
month which in Hindi is termed Malmassa or Purshottama month.
ED
This extra month is added to reconcile reduced days of lunar Year
FV
Reduced Tithi
GE
matter if just one hour after Sunrise the tithi gets changed. Similarly
suppose changed tithi begins after Sunrise and ends before Sunrise
C
HI
of next day, then that tithi is not counted and it gets reduced. For
example, on a particular day if the Sun rises in third tithi and after day
RS
two hour it gets changed to fourth tithi and the fourth tithi ends
HA
before Sunrise next day and the next Sunrise occurs on the tithi then
MA
fourth tithi has not witnessed any Sunrise and it will be considered as
reduced tithi.

Increased Tithi
GY
Any tithi which witnesses two Sun rises, is considered to be
increased Tithi. Suppose, the Sun rises on the tenth tithi and the same
LO
tithi continues till the next Sunrise, the tenth day will be considered
RO
increased tithi and shall occur subsequently twice in that month.
ST
Fusion of Tithi
A
Some times No Moon and Full Moon gets fused with the 14th
IC
day of the fortnight. Similarly at times the first lunar day may also
ED
fuse with the Full Moon day or No Moon day. When this happens it
FV
day is called Sini No Moon day. The occurrence of Full Moon day
GE
with the 14th day is called Anumatee. When the first tithi combines
LE
with No Moon day it is called Koohoo and when first tithi combines
OL
and Full Moon day are assigned particular numbers. Thus each tithi
HI
number 1, second tithi as number 2, third 3 and so on till 15th tithi i.e.

the Full Moon day which is denoted as number 15. In the same
MA
manner the 15th day of the dark half i.e. No Moon day is denoted by
number 30.

Though Sun is stationary and Earth revolves round the Sun, but

Sun is considered to be moving instead of Earth for convenience.
Earth revolves round the Sun in 365 ¼ days but for convenience it is
