Lab Manual for Computer Networks

LAB-01
Introduction to Cisco Packet tracer and

Differentiation of Straight-Through and Crossover Cable.

Objective
Introduction to Cisco Packet trace and Differentiation straight through and crossover cable.

Workbench/Workstation/Software Tools
 Cisco Packet tracer

 Puncher
 UTP cable
 Connector

Theory
DEVICES
HUBS

A network hub is a node that broadcasts data to every computer or Ethernet-

based device connected to it. A hub is less sophisticated than a switch.

ROUTERS

A router is a gateway that passes data between one or more local area networks
(LANs). Routers use the Internet Protocol (IP) to send IP packets containing data and
IP addresses of sending and destination devices located on separate local area
networks.

SWITCHES
A network switch connects devices in a network to each other, enabling them to talk
by exchanging data packets.

Cables
Different types of devices are connected through straight cables. This type of cable is
used more often. It can be used to connect a computer to a switch/hub's normal port.
Straight cable has two sides, side A and side B. Each side has wire arrangement with
same color. Crossover cable is not used to connect same type of devices. Rather, it
can be used to connect two computers directly. Both types of this cable either straight
cable or Cross cable has eight wires. There are four twisted pairs of these wires. Each
wire has a different color code.

Procedure

 Start by stripping off about 2 inches of the plastic jacket off the end of the cable.

 We should be very carefully cut the wires.

 Spread the wires apart, but be sure to hold onto the base of jacket with your hand.

 Now we have to decide which end of the cable we are making at this time.

 Arrange the wires according to the pattern of straight and cross cable.

 Cut the wires with cutter with equal space.

 Now be sure to keep a good grip on that jacket and cable.

 Insert the connector into the crimper.

 By pressing the crimper onto the wire we hear a sound of clicking.

 If everything is good, all we have to do now make the other end of the cable.

 So go back to the step one and make the crossover cable now and repeatthe from the
first step. At the end install the cable into the tester and check it weather they are
working or not.

Lab Task
1. Practice the construction of straight through cable and cross over cable ,write the difference
between both of them .

2. Gather information on the following components of Cisco packet tracer, including their pictures,
and document your understanding by writing them down.
