Thomas Hunt Morgan ( the father of experimental genetics) selected fruitfly
Drosophila
melanogaster ( the jackpot of Genetics) as experimental materials though it is
small sized (2mm size) because of many advantages in Drosophila over pea.Thomas
Hunt Morgan (1866 - 1945) , an American genetist and Noble Prize winner of 1933,is
considered as Father of Experimental Genetics for his work on and discovery of
linkage , crossing over , sex linkage , criss cross inheritance , linkage maps , mutability
of genes etc. He is called fly man of genetics because of selecting fruit fly ( Drosophila
melanogaster) as research material in experimental genetics. It was largely due to his
book “ The Theory of Gene” (1917),that genetics was accepted as a distinct branch of
biology. Linkage is the tendency of genes to stay together during inheritance through
generation without any change or separation due to their being present on the same
chromosome. The genes located in the same chromosomes are called linked genes
and those located on different chromosomes are termed unlinked genes.
(I) Morgan used Drosophila as experimental material because :
(i) It could be grown on simple synthetic medium.
(ii) It produces hundreds of individuals in single mating only.
(iii) It has long life span.
(iv) Males and females are similar.

(b) Zygotene
(c) Pachytene
(d) Diplotene
(III) Briefly mention the contribution of T.H. Morgan in genetics. (Any two )
OR
What is recombination ? Give its one application from the point of view of
genetic engineering
30- In botany, a seed is a plant embryo and food reserve enclosed in a protective
outer covering called a seed coat (testa). Seeds are the product of the ripened
ovule, after the embryo sac is fertilized by sperm from pollen, forming a zygote. The
embryo within a seed develops from the zygote and grows within the mother plant to
a certain size before growth is halted.
The formation of the seed is the defining part of the process of reproduction in seed
plants Other plants such as ferns, mosses and liverworts, do not have seeds and
use water-dependent means to propagate themselves. Seed plants now dominate
biological niches on land, from forests to grasslands both in hot and cold climates. In
the flowering plants, the ovary ripens into a fruit which contains the seed and serves
to disseminate it. Many structures commonly referred to as "seeds" are actually dry
fruits. Sunflower seeds are sometimes sold commercially while still enclosed within
the hard wall of the fruit, which must be split open to reach the seed.
Based on the above information, answer the following questions.
a) What are viable seeds?
b) Write the total no. of (i) Pollen grains (ii) Gametes in producing 200 viable
seeds.
c) Prepare a flow chart to depict the post -pollination events leading to viable
seed production in flowering plant.

33- Gene therapy is an experiental technique that uses genes to treat or
prevent diseases. In the future , this technique may allow doctors to treat a
disorder by inserting a gene into a patient’s cells instead of using drugs or
surgery. Clinical gene therapy is given to a 4 years old patient for an enzyme
that is crucial for the immune system to function.
