Credits from any of the courses in this catalog may be applicable towards recertification or salary advancement. Refer to your state or local guidelines. Courses that have a number preceeded by EDMA (Educational Masters) may be transferred into one or more Drake University School of Education graduate programs. Courses that have a number preceeded by EDEX (Educational Extension) are not transferable into graduate programs at Drake University.

What can I expect from the video courses?


Those who enroll will receive a study guide with readings and activities that expand on concepts presented. There are no tests. Instead, there are application assignments for each segment that require you to summarize, design a plan or demonstrate comprehension of a new idea. Please allow 60 days for your coursework to be graded. Expedited grading is available for an additional $85 per course. Additional transcripts are sent upon request. Although you have one year to complete each course, most complete their work sooner. Theory of Coaching credit may be applied toward a first-time coaching license. Refer to your local guidelines. A complete course outline can be sent to you, your superintendent, principal or administrator upon request.

Real Coaching is a video course designed for those who lead sports. Enroll and learn how to answer these coaching questions: Am I doing a good job? Im burned out as a coach now what? How do I continue to motivate athletes? How do I create a team? Where do I find a realistic drug and alcohol prevention program for my sport? What if I disagree with the head coach? What do I tell the media? Im just starting my coaching career how do I prepare for the future?

Volleyball Coaching 401 is designed to assist coaches in developing successful volleyball programs. Course materials will guide coaches in exploring the approaches of several of the nations top volleyball coaches. Students will explore the building blocks of philosophy, planning, motivation, team building and evaluation. They will also survey the strategies successful coaches employ in teaching the skills and tactics of the game. Students will complete readings and view video presentations from these experts in the field and apply what theyve learned to their own programs.

Football Coaching 401 is designed to assist football coaches at all levels in developing a program from the ground up. It approaches the game from the basics through some of the more intricate strategies. Combining fundamentals and teaching techniques from some of the top coaches in the country, this course will help you develop your own philosophies and preparations for a winning program. Students will complete readings and view video presentations from these top coaches, allowing application to their own programs.

Baseball Coaching 401 is designed to assist high school baseball coaches in developing a program from the ground up. The course will explore fundamental individual skill development as well as team concepts necessary for building a successful program. The course will also encourage and assist students in the development of their own baseball belief systems. Students will complete readings and view video presentations from experts in the field and be able to apply what they have learned to their own programs.

Softball Coaching 401 is designed to assist coaches in developing effective organizational, motivational and teaching strategies to guide a successful softball program. This course includes professionally produced videos and text from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. These materials will guide you in exploring the approaches of several top coaches in the United States. You will explore coaching philosophies, planning motivation and strategies of the game. This class will show the strategies of successful coaches in teaching the fundamentals of the of the game of softball.

Track & Field 401 examines the methods for teaching and coaching the mechanics of track and field events (sprints, relays, hurdles, distance, long jump, triple jump, high jump, pole vault, shot put and discus); the training concepts and theories for various events; and the organization and administration of a track and field program.

Enroll in one of the nations first distance learning courses in adapted physical education. A team of educational field consultants have given their writings and design to engineers who created simple, affordable blueprints for adaptive devices.

Relevant Elementary Physical Education will help you understand the research behind movement and learning and how you can put more relevance into organized, well-managed lessons. You will learn strategies to help anchor learning with a variety of movement-based activities that teach children how to learn and move at the same time. Exercise can help the brain decrease the amount of mental stress that can cause lapses in learning. You will learn to develop an action plan to creatively implement activities that will easily supplement what you already teach without changing your whole curriculum.

Ethics in Sports raises sociological and ethical questions for those who teach and coach. At the same time presenters illustrate how philosophical analysis can clarify and help resolve the difficult moral and conceptual issues at stake.

Parent-Athlete-Coach Alliance is designed to assist coaches in developing strategies to foster positive, effective relationships with parents of the athletes they coach. Course materials will guide coaches to explore changing backgrounds and roles of coaches and parents; identify various family dynamics; and to examine the perspectives of coaches, parents, athletes and administrators. The course will also help coaches develop effective communication strategies to use with parents and ways to encourage appropriate parent involvement in their programs.

Step Up and Lead is designed to assist coaches in developing strategies to foster positive, effective leadership skills. Tom Keating has designed course materials to guide coaches in an exploration of the characteristics of leadership, the importance of leadership in team sports, the types of leadership and the responsibilities of a leader. Students will complete readings and view video presentations from leading experts in the field and apply what theyve learned to their own programs. Practical application assignments are included.

Tom Keating led the Wahlert Eagles to 10 state titles, becoming the first coach to win 10 state volleyball titles in the state of Iowa. In addition, Wahlert has been runner-up three times during Keatings 20 years as head coach. This four-time Iowa Conference Coach of the Year has sent more than 20 players into Division I programs. With more than 650 wins and 11 conference championships, Keating is considered one of the top high school coaches in the country.
