Gorilla shot dead in zoo to save boy’s life, 1st June 2016
1. On Saturday, zoo officials shot a gorilla after a four year-old boy fell into its enclosure in
the US city of Cincinnati.
2. While the child and his mother were visiting the zoo, the boy accidently fell into the
gorilla’s area. After he fell, the gorilla grabbed him and pulled him through water. The
animal did not attack the boy but it was so big and strong and the zoo did not want to take
any risks. So they shot and killed the 400lb (180kg) gorilla. The child was taken to a local
hospital and will probably be well.
3. Zoo director Thane Maynard said that the zoo made a difficult decision and they made
the right decision because they saved the boy’s life. They had the opportunity to use a
tranquilliser, but this was a bad idea because tranquilisers do not work quickly enough.
And although the boy was not under attack, he "certainly was at risk".
4. The zoo staff were very upset about the death of the gorilla. It was a big loss for the zoo
family and the gorilla population worldwide.
5. However, some people have criticised the zoo’s actions. They say that the child was not
in danger and that the gorilla only wanted to protect the boy. Biologist and chairman of the
The Gorilla Organization, Ian Redmond, said shooting was not necessary.
6. He said: "When gorillas or other apes have things they shouldn’t have, keepers will
negotiate with them, bring food, their favourite treats, pineapple or some kind of fruit that
they don’t know and negotiate with them."
7. There is worldwide anger because of what happened. Many people feel that the death
of the 17-year-old gorilla was the fault of the child’s parents.
8. Something similar happened in 1986 on the island of Jersey, when a five-year-old boy
fell into a gorilla enclosure. He was lying down unconscious with a broken arm. A gorilla
called Jambo came to protect him from the other gorillas. When the boy woke up, he
started to cry, which caused all the gorillas to run away. This allowed the zoo keepers to
climb into the enclosure and rescue the child.
9. In 1996, a gorilla named Binti Jua saved the life of a three-year-old boy who fell into her
enclosure at Brookfield Zoo, near Chicago. When the gorilla approached the child, people
started screaming because they thought the animal wanted to hurt him. Instead, she
picked the child up and carried him to the enclosure entrance where the zoo staff could
access him.
