Russia is the largest country in the world – by far!
Covering over 17 million square kilometers, Russia is the largest country on Earth. In fact, it's so large that you could fit the entire continent of Africa inside it with room to spare! Canada has the longest coastline in the world. Stretching over 202,080 kilometers, Canada’s coastline is longer than the next four countries combined! From the Atlantic to the Pacific, Canada's shores are diverse and beautiful. The Sahara Desert was once a lush, green paradise. Around 10,000 years ago, the Sahara was a lush, verdant region with lakes, rivers, and wildlife. It’s thought to have dried up gradually due to changes in the Earth’s orbit and tilt. There are more than 200,000 islands in Indonesia. Indonesia is an archipelago consisting of approximately 17,500 islands, but with around 200,000 islands in total when you factor in smaller, uninhabited ones. It's the largest archipelago nation on Earth. The Dead Sea is so salty that you can’t sink! The water in the Dead Sea is about 10 times saltier than typical ocean water, making it nearly impossible to sink. People flock to the Dead Sea not only for the unique floating experience but also for its therapeutic mud. There are only two countries in the world that are landlocked and also have coastlines. The countries of Lesotho and Vatican City are both landlocked (surrounded entirely by another country) and have a unique status. Lesotho is entirely surrounded by South Africa, and Vatican City is inside Rome. Antarctica is the driest, windiest, and coldest continent. Antarctica might be a frozen desert, but it’s also the driest place on Earth, receiving almost no precipitation. Its winds can reach up to 200 mph, and temperatures can drop as low as -128°F (-89°C)! Africa is home to the longest river in the world – the Nile River. The Nile stretches over 6,650 kilometers (4,130 miles) across northeastern Africa. Though the Amazon River in South America is often argued to be longer, the Nile currently holds the title of the world's longest. There is a country where the entire population lives on a single island. The island nation of Malta in the Mediterranean has a population of around 514,000 people, and nearly all of them live on the country's only inhabited island, Malta. Finland has 188,000 lakes! Nicknamed the "Land of a Thousand Lakes," Finland actually has over 188,000 lakes, making it one of the most lake-dense countries on the planet. The Great Wall of China is not a single continuous wall. Stretching over 13,000 miles, the Great Wall is actually a series of walls and fortifications built by different Chinese dynasties over the centuries. It was never a single, uninterrupted structure. There’s a place on Earth where you can stand in four states at once. The Four Corners is the only point in the United States where the borders of four states meet: Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah. You can literally stand in four states at once! The world’s largest volcano is on Mars. Olympus Mons on Mars is about three times the height of Mount Everest and is the largest volcano in our solar system. It stands at a towering 69,841 feet (21,287 meters). In Switzerland, it's illegal to own just one guinea pig. Guinea pigs are social creatures, and in Switzerland, animal welfare laws require them to be kept in pairs or groups so they aren’t lonely. A single guinea pig is considered a form of animal cruelty! There’s a country in Africa with no rivers. Chad, located in North-Central Africa, is one of the few countries in the world without any rivers. It relies on seasonal rains and underground water sources for its water needs.
