Introduction
This proposal outlines a study aimed at evaluating the impact of the Addis Ababa Light Rail
Transit (LRT) on the city’s public transit system and its overall efficiency. Launched as a
transformative urban mobility initiative, the LRT aims to alleviate traffic congestion, reduce
travel times, and provide a reliable mode of transportation for the growing population of Addis
Ababa. Given the increasing urbanization and the pressing need for sustainable transportation
solutions, this study seeks to assess the effectiveness of the LRT in enhancing the public transit
landscape.
Objectives
The primary objective of this study is to analyze the operational and social impacts of the Addis
Ababa Light Rail Transit on the public transit system. Specific goals include:
1. Evaluating the changes in travel behavior and patterns among commuters since the LRT's
implementation.
2. Assessing the efficiency of the LRT in terms of punctuality, ridership, and overall service
quality.
3. Identifying the LRT’s role in reducing congestion and improving air quality in the city.
4. Exploring user satisfaction and perceptions regarding the LRT compared to other modes
of public transport.
Methodology
The study will adopt a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative research
methods. Data collection will include:
Surveys: Administered to LRT users and other public transit passengers to gather
insights on travel patterns, satisfaction levels, and perceived efficiency.
Interviews: Conducted with transportation officials, LRT management, and commuters
to gain a deeper understanding of operational challenges and successes.
Statistical Analysis: Utilization of ridership data, travel time metrics, and traffic flow
statistics to quantify the LRT's impact on public transit efficiency.
Policy Implications: Findings will provide critical insights for policymakers regarding
the effectiveness of light rail systems as a component of urban public transport strategies.
Academic Contribution: The study will contribute to the existing body of knowledge on
urban transit systems, particularly in the context of developing nations.
Community Benefits: Understanding the LRT's impact will help improve public
transport planning and enhance service delivery for residents.
Expected Outcomes
The research is expected to yield comprehensive insights into the operational efficiency and
social implications of the Addis Ababa Light Rail Transit. The findings will be documented in a
detailed thesis and presented to stakeholders, including the Addis Ababa City Administration,
transportation planners, and relevant community organizations, fostering informed discussions
on future public transit initiatives.
Conclusion
The proposed study on the impact of the Addis Ababa Light Rail Transit aims to deliver a
thorough evaluation of its effects on the public transit system and its efficiency. By analyzing
travel behavior, operational metrics, and user satisfaction, this research seeks to contribute
valuable knowledge to the discourse on urban transportation development in Ethiopia. This study
not only fulfills the requirements for the MA program in Project Analysis but also aims to
support the ongoing efforts to enhance sustainable urban mobility solutions in Addis Ababa.
