What is your take in the West Philippine Sea Issue? And as an ROTC cadet what
can you do?
Geopolitically significant territorial issues are at play in the West Philippine Sea issue. I
can make a contribution as an ROTC cadet by developing my awareness of
international law, improving my knowledge of maritime security and national defense,
and encouraging patriotism and readiness.

What is the enhanced defense cooperation agreement? And how can it affect the
geopolitical situation of the philippines?
The VFA gives American military and Department of Defense (DOD) civilian personnel
traveling to the Philippines on official business the legal foundation and status
protections they need, but the EDCA gives American forces permission to periodically
access designated locations in the Philippines for security cooperation exercises, joint
and combined military training exercises, and humanitarian aid.

What is the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea? And how did the
July 2016 arbitral tribunal affect the West Philipinne Sea?
A global agreement known as the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea
(UNCLOS) outlines each country’s obligations and rights with regard to how its waters
are used. It covers a number of topics, including continental shelf, exclusive economic
zone (EEZ), and territorial waters. The goal of the pact is to strike a balance between
the rights of other countries to use and navigate the ocean and the interests of coastal
governments.
The South China Sea, which the Philippines refers to as the West Philippine Sea, was
the subject of a lawsuit filed by the Philippines against China. In July 2016, an arbitral
tribunal operating under UNCLOS rendered a decision. Following its decision, the
tribunal determined that China’s broad claims within the “nine-dash line” were
unfounded in terms of international law. Also, it concluded that China’s interference with
Philippine fishing and exploration operations within its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ)
constituted a violation of the country's sovereign rights. The verdict underscored the
substantial damage done to the marine ecosystem by China’s operations and the
construction of artificial islands in the region. China’s compliance with the order and its
execution remain complicated and divisive topics in regional politics, despite the fact
that the case was a major legal triumph for the Philippines.
