b. "Moderate climate", is defined as a climate for which the Winter Design Dry Bulb Temperature is 10 °F
(-12 °C).

c. "NPS", is defined as nominal pipe size and is a dimensionless industry standard designation.

2. INSTALLATION

2.1 Design and Materials

2.1.1 Except as noted in this specification, the design of piping for protective steam heating systems shall
conform to the requirements of ASME B31.3.

2.1.2 KBR Design Specification P20-1D, the Piping Material Classes, drawings, and standards shall specify
the material to be used for the protective steam heating system. Materials shall be new and unused.

2.2 KBR Project Data

2.2.1 The location of steam distribution manifolds (DM) and collection manifolds (CM) shall be as specified
on the Steam Tracing Piping Plans.

2.2.2 Drawings detail the piping from the steam source to the distribution manifold and from the collection
manifold to a condensate collection header, a sewer receptacle, or a dry well.

2.2.3 Steam lines to distribution manifolds and condensate lines from collection manifolds have line
numbers which are recorded in the Steam Tracing Nomenclatures. A steam tracer designated with a "T"
followed by a steam source designation, area number and an area sequence number, is recorded on the
Steam Tracer Identification Index Sheets.

2.2.4 Drawings of traced piping are marked to indicate the extent of the tracer run.

2.2.5 The basic arrangements of steam tracers for piping are shown in Figure 1.

2.2.6 The type and details of steam tracing for instruments and instrument piping shall be in accordance with
the instrument project drawings listed on the Index of Instrument Data.

2.2.7 Unless otherwise specified, all dimensions shown on the drawings and standards are approximate and
may be adjusted plus or minus 20% to suit field conditions.

2.3 Construction Requirements

2.3.1 Tracer contact shall preferably start at the high point of the equipment being traced and shall be self
draining except as noted below.

2.3.2 Tracers in moderate climate applications may have pockets as illustrated in Figure 2. The total pocket
depth (dimensions A plus B) shall not exceed the maximum vertical rise shown in P20-12DS-6315.

2.3.3 The maximum length of any tracer shall be a function of the supply steam pressure and the diameter
of the pipe or tube used as the tracer as given in P20-12DS-6315. The maximum tracer length is the total
length of the tracer that is in contact with the item being traced.

2.3.4 Unless a piece of equipment requires separate heating, each tracer shall be used to heat as many
items as practical without exceeding the length or pocket restrictions for the combined trace run. However, a
single tracer circuit shall not be applied to separate lines, since the tracing circuit for each line must be
capable of being isolated for maintenance. Additionally, separate tracing circuits are required for primary
and spare pumps and the associated suction and discharge piping.

2.3.5 Tracers shall be attached to the pipe by means of stainless steel tie wire, 0.064 in. (1.6 mm) diameter,
spaced on approximately 3 ft. (900 mm) centers for horizontal installations and on 4 ft. (1200 mm) centers for
vertical installations. When heat transfer compound (protective methods Type E and F of Figure 3) is used,
the tracers shall be attached to the pipe by means of stainless steel bands, 1/2 in. (12 mm) wide x 0.020 in.
(0.5 mm) thick, spaced on approximately 2 ft. (600 mm) centers maximum for both horizontal and vertical
installations. Supports for manifolds and leads shall be designed by the field.

2.3.6 When isolated tracers are used, as in protective method "A" and "B" of Figure 3 they shall be
secured with 2.5 wraps of high temperature banding tape, as recommended by the tracing supplier, spaced
on approximate 12 in. (300 mm) centers.

2.3.7 Protective methods "C" and "D" in Figure 3, show standard tracer installation without heat transfer
compound.

2.3.8 Protective method "G" of Figure 3 shall have coils spaced in accordance with Table I. Coiled tracers
shall not be used on horizontal vessels.

2.3.9 When feasible, pre-insulated tracer leads shall be used. Otherwise, bare tracer leads shall be grouped
to permit insulation as a unit.

2.5 Tracer Identification

2.5.1 Each end of steam tracers shall be identified with a 1 1/2 x 2 in. (40 mm x 50 mm), minimum size, and
corrosion resistant metal tag. The tag shall list all items serviced by the tracer. Typical tags are shown in
Figure 4. Tags shall be field purchased.

2.5.2 One tag shall be located at the tracer steam source securely attached to the downstream side of the
tracer shut off valve. The second tag shall be securely attached at the discharge end of the tracer attached
to the upstream side of the tracer block valve on closed condensate systems; or the upstream side of the
trap on open condensate systems. Figure 5 shows the proper tag locations for different tracer
arrangements.

3. PROTECTIVE STEAM HEATING FOR EQUIPMENT

3.1 Pumps

3.1.1 Pumps shall be steam traced by hand forming hairpin loops of nominal size 1/2 in. (12 mm) tubing.

3.1.2 The tracer loops shall be approximately 3 in. (75 mm) center to center and attached to the surface of
the pump by means of 1/2 x 0.02 in. (12 mm x 0.5 mm) stainless steel bands or stainless steel wire for small
pumps. Figure 9 and Figure 11 show typical installation of pump steam tracing. Insulation shall be applied
over the steam tracing.

3.2 Vessels

3.2.1 For external protective steam heating, vessels NPS 30 and smaller shall be steam traced with tracers
spirally wound around the vessel, as shown in Figure 6. Larger vessels shall tracing designed on a case-by-
case basis. The method to be used shall be shown on the equipment design drawings.

3.2.2 When spiraled tracers are used, the tracer shall be nominal size 1/2 in. (12 mm) tubing and shall be
wound around the vessel with the number of spirals and the distance between spirals specified on the
equipment design drawings. A typical arrangement for spiral tracing is shown in Figure 7. A minimum of
three supports per 180° of spiral are required.

3.2.3 When only the vessel bottom requires heating it shall be done by spiraling or looping tracers about the
bottom of the vessel, see Figures 10 and 12.

3.2.4 When spiraled tracers are specified for vessel bottoms the procedure shall be the same as in
Paragraph 3.2.2.

3.2.5 When looped tracers are specified the vessel bottom shall be traced by hairpinning nominal size 1/2 in.
(12 mm) tubing in sections and attaching them with vertical 1 1/2 x 1/4 in. (40 mm x 6 mm) steel straps. The
straps are attached to the vessel bottom with 3/8 in. (10 mm) threaded steel studs welded on 24 in.
(600 mm) centers. The straps shall be installed within 4 in. (100 mm) of each end of a section of loops. The
length of the loops shall be proportional to the diameter of the vessel bottom. The center to center spacing
of the tracer hairpin loops shall be approximately 3 inches (75 mm).

3.2.6 Horizontal vessels and drums may have external protective steam heating applied by hairpinning
nominal size 1/2 in. (12 mm) tubing on 3 in. (75 mm) centers held in place by two 3/4 x 0.20 in.
(12 mm x 0.5 mm) stainless steel bands on each section of loops. See Figure 9 for details.

3.2.7 In all cases insulation shall be applied over the tracers.
