LEARNING WRITING AND SPELLING

This lesson will be all about teaching handwriting. Learning to recognize and
form letters is a fundamental part of writing. Because handwriting is a basic tool
used in many subjects — taking notes, taking tests, and doing classroom work and
homework for almost every content area as well as in language arts classes — poor
handwriting can have a pervasive effect on school performance.
The lesson will also be all about teaching spelling. Students who experience
difficulties with spelling may struggle to accurately represent all the precise sounds
within words, confuse the sequence of letters, have difficulty retaining learnt
spelling patterns over the long term, and have problems transferring this knowledge
to their writing. They often use inefficient visual strategies, such as relying on visual
memory to recall spellings, and this often results in incorrectly sequenced or
missing letters. Just like reading, improving spelling is not something that “just
happens”.

 Identify the pictures and arrange the letters to form the correct spelling of
the words.
 Identify the correct spelling of the words.
 Complete the words by filling the gap the correct letters to complete the
spelling of the words.
 Identify the following pictures and select the correct letter to complete the
spelling of the words.
 Identify the letters by connecting the broken lines.
 Determine and write the name of the pictures in cursive style.

Spelling and Writing

Spelling, the art of correctly assembling words from their letters, is one of the
essential components of successful writing. Being confident at spelling leads to confidence
in all aspects of literacy. The ability to recognize the links between word of the same origin
and understanding word relationships has been proven to aid comprehension skills.
Spelling is important because it aids in reading. It helps cement the connection that is
shared between sounds and letters. Learning high frequency sight words also has been
shown to help with both reading and writing.

Writing assessment can be used for a variety of appropriate purposes, both inside the
classroom and outside: providing assistance to students, awarding a grade, placing students
in appropriate courses, allowing them to exit a course or sequence of courses, certifying
proficiency, and evaluating programs – to name some of the more obvious. Given the high
stakes nature of many of these assessment purposes, it is crucial that assessment practices
be guided by sound principles to insure that they are valid, fair, and appropriate to the
context and purposes for which they designed. This position statement aims to provide that
guidance.

In spite of the diverse uses to which writing assessment is put, the general principles
undergirding it are similar:

Assessments of written literacy should be designed and evaluated by well-informed

current or future teachers of the students being assessed, for purposes clearly understood
by all the participants; should elicit from student writers a variety of pieces, preferably over
a substantial period of time; should encourage and reinforce good teaching practices; and
should be solidly grounded in the latest research on language learning as well as accepted
best assessment practices.
