Age Word Problem

1. John is four times as old as Mary. Five years ago, John was seven times as old as Mary. How old are
John and Mary now?

Solution:

Let John's current age be J and Mary's current age be M.

Table

John Mary Equation

Present J M J=4M

Five years ago J-5 M-5 J-5=7(M-5)

Solving for M:

J-5 = 7(M-5)

4M - 5 = 7M - 35

-5 + 35 = 7M - 4M

30 = 3M

M = 10

Solving for J:

J = 4M

J = 4 * 10

J = 40
Therefore, John is 40 years old, and Mary is 10 years old.

1 For Mixture Problem

A chemist has two solutions: one is 60% acid and the other is 30% acid. How many liters of each solution
should she mix to obtain 50 liters of a solution that is 45% acid?

Solution:

Let x be the amount of 60% acid solution and y be the amount of 30% acid solution.

We have two equations:

x + y = 50

0.6x + 0.3y = 0.45 * 50

From the first equation:

y = 50 - x

Substitute y in the second equation:

0.6x + 0.3(50 - x) = 22.5

0.6x + 15 - 0.3x = 22.5

0.3x = 7.5

x = 7.5 / 0.3

x = 25

Thus, y = 50 - 25

y = 25

Therefore, the chemist needs to mix 25 liters of the 60% acid solution and 25 liters of the 30% acid
solution.

Distance, Rate and Time Problem

A train travels from City A to City B at a speed of 90 km/h. On its return journey from City B to City A, the
train travels at a speed of 60 km/h due to track maintenance. If the total round trip takes 7 hours, what
is the distance between City A and City B?

Solution:

1. Define Variable:

- Let (d) be the distance between City A and City B.

2. Set Up Time Equations:

- The time taken to travel from City A to City B at 90 km/h is:

Time A to B = d/90

- The time taken to travel from City B to City A at 60 km/h is:

Time B to A = d/60

3. Set Up Total Time Equation:

- The total travel time is the sum of the two times:

d/90 + d/60 = 7

4. Find a Common Denominator and Solve for (d):

- The common denominator for 90 and 60 is 180:

2d/180 + 3d/180 = 7

- Combine the fractions:

5d/180 = 7

- Multiply both sides by 180 to clear the fraction:

5d = 1260

- Solve for (d):

d = 1260/5

d = 252
Therefore, the distance between City A and City B is 252 km.

1. How did you formulate your own problem from the 3 topics mentioned?

Answer: I formulated my own problem by first understanding the core concepts of each topic. Then, I
considered real-world scenarios where these concepts could be applied. Finally, I combined these
elements to create a problem that challenges the understanding of all three topics.

2. How did you determine that your own constructed problem is aligned in the 3 topics mentioned?

Answer: I determined that my own constructed problem is aligned in the 3 topics mentioned by double-
checking it and identifying if my own constructed problem is related to the 3 topics.

3. What do you think of the level of difficulty you encountered upon constructing the problem?

Answer: I found the process of constructing a problem that encompasses all three topics to be
moderately challenging. It required me to think critically about how the concepts intersect and to
ensure that the problem was solvable and engaging.

4. How did you arrive at your answers?

Answer: By solving it and try hard to get the correct answers.

5. Enumerate the steps you follow upon answering your constructed problems.

Answer: First, I watch videos on how they answer it. Second: Using my mind to solve the problems.
Third: Using a calculator.
