Section A: READING SKILLS (20 marks)

1. Read the passage given below.

Mangroves are unique and vital coastal ecosystems found in tropical and subtropical regions around
the world. These fascinating plants thrive in the intertidal zones where saltwater meets freshwater,
creating a distinctive environment that supports a wide array of wildlife.
Mangroves are characterized by their specialized root systems. Their roots, called pneumatophores,
stick out of the water and allow the plants to breathe in oxygen, which is scarce in waterlogged soils.
Additionally, their roots provide stability in the muddy, unstable ground of coastal areas. This root
system also acts as a natural barrier, reducing the impact of storm surges and protecting coastal
communities from erosion and flooding.
The dense mangrove forests serve as important habitats for various species of fish, birds, and other
animals. Many fish species use mangrove areas as breeding grounds and nurseries, while birds find
refuge and nesting sites in the dense foliage. Mangroves also support a rich community of insects,
crabs, and other small creatures.
Besides their ecological importance, mangroves play a crucial role in containing carbon. They capture
and store carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, helping to combat climate change. Their ability to
absorb and hold carbon makes them valuable in efforts to reduce greenhouse gases and mitigate
global warming.
Despite their importance, mangrove forests are under threat from human activities such as
deforestation, land reclamation, and pollution. Protecting and restoring these vital ecosystems is
essential for maintaining biodiversity, safeguarding coastal communities, and supporting climate

Humour is a powerful force that transcends boundaries and unites people from all walks of life. It is a
universal language that can bridge gaps between cultures, generations, and social groups. At its
core, humour is about finding joy and laughter in everyday situations, and it plays a crucial role in our
lives.
One of the most remarkable aspects of humour is its ability to lighten the mood and ease tensions. In
challenging or stressful situations, a well-timed joke or witty comment can provide a much-needed
break and help us gain a fresh perspective. For instance, during difficult times, comedians often use
satire and parody to offer relief and provoke thought, reminding us that even in adversity, there can
be moments of levity.
Humour also has the power to build connections and strengthen relationships. Shared laughter can
create a sense of camaraderie and understanding among individuals. When people find common
Page 2 of 8
ground through humour, they often feel more comfortable and open with one another. This shared
experience can break down barriers and foster a sense of belonging.
Moreover, humour is not only entertaining but also intellectually stimulating. It often involves clever
wordplay, unexpected twists, and creative thinking. Understanding and appreciating humour requires
us to engage with language and context, which can enhance our cognitive abilities and problem-
solving skills.
However, humour is subjective and can vary greatly from one person to another. What one individual
finds hilarious, another might find off-putting or offensive. Therefore, it is important to be mindful of
the context and audience when using humour. Sensitivity and respect are key to ensuring that
humour serves its purpose of bringing people together rather than driving them apart.
Humour is more than just a form of entertainment. It is a vital component of human interaction that
can uplift spirits, strengthen bonds, and stimulate our minds. Embracing humour in a thoughtful and
inclusive manner can enrich our lives and help us navigate the complexities of the world with a smile.
