To Our Readers
The 2010 edition of the EFT Data Book is significantly different
from the issues of the past few years. Among the biggest
changes, ATM&Debit News has dropped most of the estimates.
As the industry has consolidated, many of the remaining players,
including most of the large EFT and point-of-sale debit networks,
have stopped making key information public, so the reliability of
estimates grows less year to year.
As a result, the EFT Data Book no longer includes a number of
charts, including those regarding PIN-debit purchases, monthly
transactions per ATM and annual PIN-based volume in the U.S.
The EFT Data Book also no longer numerically ranks EFT networks.
Instead, networks are listed in alphabetical order and include infor-
mation that could be confirmed or that the networks did provide.
The data book, however, is not withoutsome estimates.
ATM&Debit News estimated the number of ATM shipments
worldwide and in the Americas, but we also provide a clear expla-
nation of how we derived the data.
New, reliable data also was added this year, including debit card
information related to health savings accounts, prepaid card
reload locations and network switch and interchange fees. We
also have included information relevant to mobile banking, which
many experts believe eventually will help drive the mobile-pay-
ments market.
We hope these changes offer a benefit that is satisfactory to you,
our readers. Our goal is to provide data that can help you do your
job better, not to mislead you with inaccurate information.
Thank you,
Frederick H. Lowe,
