Oxytocin

Oxytocin is a hormone used to initiate or improve uterine contractions to achieve early vaginal delivery or reinforce labor in cases of inertia. It works by stimulating the uterus, especially the gravid uterus just before parturition. The typical dosage is an IV infusion of 10 units of oxytocin with 500 ml of saline solution. Side effects include cardiac arrhythmias, hypertension, nausea, vomiting, and potential anaphylactic reactions. Nurses should assess patients' physical exam findings, orientation, reflexes, vital signs, lab tests, urinary output, and medical history such as previous c-sections.
