Last years cruise was nice. We had a really nice time in St. Lucia and St. Kitts. Ron got a tour of Ross vet school while we were there. Carla got sick on the very last night with a foodborne illness and all of the lovely things that go along with that! Needless to say, she didnt get to parasail when we returned to Ft. Lauderdale. Pat (Carlas mom), Irene and Ron got to parasail, but dont ask to watch the video! It was taken by Carlas dad who insisted he knew how to work the video camera. If you call getting shots of the bottom of the boat and the upside down skyline good, then, yes, he knows how to operate the video camera. From Florida, we drove up to Atlanta and flew to Oklahoma to stay with Rons sister, Reba and her family and to surprise Rons parents. Christmas was great and we ate lots of food and celebrated Rons birthday. It was the first time that all of the Tylers had been together in 7 years! It was nice to see OK again too. Carla was suffering from sea sickness, an issue that affects her when she disembarks, and is alleviated when shes moving, so, we ended up driving around a lot while we were there! Irene turned 11 years old in February and decided that she didnt want to have the typical birthday party. We decided that when the weather was nicer we would take her and a friend to either Carowinds (an amusement park in NC) or to Pigeon Forge, TN. We ended up bringing her friend, Mira to Pigeon Forge in May during graduation weekend at Virginia Tech. It was such a great idea because we got away from the most hectic
time in Blacksburg and escaped. Irene did cut her forehead on the side of the pool, but no stitches were needed and the rest of the weekend was great. In March Ron left for his research trip to India. He got the opportunity to study Mycobacterium tuberculosis in sheep and goat, so, he took it. It was a long four months, but harder on Ron than Carla and Irene since he was the one away from home and in a different cultural setting. Carlas dad came down to help out for a week and Rons mom came out to help for a couple of months. This was a tremendous help since Carla works full time and is taking classes to earn her Masters in Public Health. The unfortunate death of his grandfather, Jack Dillehay, put the trip into perspective because he wasnt able to return to attend the funeral and say goodbye. When asked if given the opportunity would he return he said Ill have to ask Carla. Four months is a long time to be away from my family. In June Irene graduated from elementary school! She and four other students in her class played Pomp and Circumstance for the entering graduates. Irene also had her violin recital in which she played Simple Gift and America the Beautiful and did very well. In July, Atlantis STS-135, the last shuttle mission, lifted off on Mrs. Tylers 59th birthday in Port Canaveral, FL. What a great memory. Later that month, Ron flew home from India (Carla forgot to pick him up at the airport) and flew out of Roanoke the next day for Harlingen, TX. He spent a couple of days there with his parents and Irene (and eating steak for the first time in 4 months), then he and Irene flew back to Blacksburg together. We were all finally together again. What a happy time! As a surprise, Ron allowed Irene to get her ears pierced!!!!!! Yeah!!!!! Irene had wanted to get her ears pierced for some time, but when we got to the piercing place at the mall, Irene became nervous and started to cry.
After a quick pep talk from mom & dad, she decided to go through with it and was ecstatic after it was done. In August, Irene started middle school! A 6th grader riding the bus with older middle schoolers and high schoolers. Yes, a few tears were shed on the first day of school and it wasnt Irene who did the crying! My little baby is growing up. Officially the second tallest in the house, she has surpassed Carla. We all knew this day was coming Also in August, Carla started a new job in the Microbiology lab (a move from the General biology lab) still at Virginia Tech. Shes extremely happy at her new job. The people that she works with are really nice and she really enjoys it. This Fall was fairly quiet with Irene playing softball, taking violin lessons and Girl Scouts. Ron and Carla are busy with school and their respective degrees, which should be coming to an end fairly soon! Ron enjoyed another year of Hokie football and is excited the Hokies will be going to the Sugar Bowl!
We wish nothing but health and happiness to all of our friends and family in 2012. Take care and have a great Holiday. Love, Ron, Carla and Irene Tyler 119 C Hearthstone Dr. Blacksburg, VA 24060 (540) 998-3912 (Carlas cell phone) (540) 998-4451 (Rons cell phone)
