1Overview of the Air Transport System Lesson Overview
Air transportation is a huge industry. Its services are provided by several components with a strong international dimension. In order for the system to meet the needs of its customers, there is a strong requiremnent for cooperation between all organizations involved.
After only acentury of existence, aviation reached unprecedented levels of
activity and sophistication. Today's industry bears no resemblance with what it was only fifty years ago. Technological advances in aircraft design changed the face of this industry from wooden to supersonic airliners in a matter of decades.
Airports had toadapt to this fast-changing reality by providing facilities and
services keeping pace with the progresses of its customers.
In spite of several recent setbacks in the air transportation industry, it is
recovering and expets predict that passenger volumes should double within the next twenty years. It willbe caused by economic growth, the increase in disposable income, the advent of low-cost carriers, the increased efficiency of new aircraft, the intensification of international trade, and the liberalizationof air transportation. This will put even greater pressure on airports to keep pace with this level of demand.
