SLIP TEST – 4(Magnetism & EMI)

SECTION- A (1mark)
1. predict the direction of induced current in metal rings 1 and 2 lying in the same plane where current I in the
wire is increasing steadily.

2. The magnetic susceptibility of magnetism at 300 K is 1.2 X 10 5 . At what temp. will its susceptibility
become 1.44 X 105?
3. In a coil of resistance 100Ω a current is induced by changing the magnetic flux through it. The variation of
current with time is as shown in figure. The magnitude of change in flux through the coil is

(a) 200 weber (b) 275 weber

(c) 225 weber (d) 250 weber

4. Relative permittivity and permeability of a material are εr and μr, respectively. Which of the following
values of these quantities are allowed for a diamagnetic material?
(A)εr=1.5, µr=0.5 B) εr=0.5, µr=0.5 (C) εr=1.5, µr=1.5 (D) εr=0.5, µr=1.5
5. How does the (a) pole strength (b) magnetic moment change if a bar magnet cut into two equal pieces
transverse to length.
SECTION – B (2 marks)
6. A metallic rod PQ of length l is rotated with an angular velocity w in a magnetic field B about an axis
passing through the mid – point O of the rod and perpendicular to the plane of paper as shown. What is the
potential difference developed between the point O and Q of the rod.

7. The following figure shows the variation of intensity of magnetization versus the applied magnetic field
intensity, H, for two magnetic materials A and B.

(a) Identify the materials A and B

(b) For the material A, plot the variation of intensity of magnetisation versus
temperature.

8. Draw the magnetic field lines for a current carrying solenoid. When a rod made of (a) copper (b) aluminium
(c) iron are inserted with in the solenoid as shown
SECTION – C (3 marks)
9.(a) Define Self Inductance Write its SI unit. Derive an expression for self-inductance of solenoid
(b) How does mutual inductance of a pair of coils change when
(i) the number of turns in each coil is increased
(ii) a thin iron sheet is placed between the two coils
10. (a) State Faraday’s Law of electromagnetic induction
(b) A bar magnet is moved in the direction indicated by the arrow between two coils PQ and CB. Predict
the direction sof induced current in each coil.

(c) A coil and a bulb are connected in series with a d.c source, a soft iron is then inserted in the coil,
what happens to the intensity of bulb.
11. (A)Two magnets of magnetic moments M and M√3 are joined to form a cross. The combination is
suspended in a uniform magnetic field B. The magnetic moment M now makes an angle θ with the field
direction. Find the value of angle θ.
(B) In what way is gauss’s law in magnetism different from that used in electrostatics?

Answer the following, giving reasons : (a) (b) (c) Induced emf does not always produce induced current. The mo on of
a copper plate is damped when it is allowed to oscillate between pole pieces of a strong magnet. No power is
consumed in an ac circuit containing a pure inductor.
