IGNOU
Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) was established in 1985 by an Act of Parliament, with a view to democratise education and reaching the unreached. IGNOU has now emerged as the largest University in the world. It has mandate to cover large segments of population across the length and breadth of the country particularly the disadvantaged groups of society engaged in various vocations and professions and unemployed youth. The primaryemphasis is on innovation, flexibility and cost-effectiveness of education. The University follows a learner-centric approach. It has successfully adopted a policy of openness and flexibility in terms of relaxed entry qualifications and provision for multiple entry and exit, pace, place of study, etc. At present, IGNOU is offering over 300 Programmes and has about 2.2 million students on its roll. The University operates through a strong network of more than 60 Regional Centres. There are around 2500 IGNOU Study Centres across the country and 41 overseas Centres, which provide individualised support to the learners. Most of these Centres are equipped with the state-of-the-art tele-conferencing facility. The University produces high quality and rich content courseware for its learners for which the IGNOU was conferred an Award of Excellence by the Commonwealth of Learning (COL), Canada. It is a University with a difference.
In addition, IGNOU also has the responsibility to promote and develop distance education system in India.
Introduction
With the declaration 0f 2005-2014 as the decade of education for Sustainable Development by United Nation, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has established a University level Chair, cutting across disciplines and schools, to develop and promote Education for Sustainable Development in India in March 2007. The eminent agriculture scientist Prof MS Swaminathan is the Honourary Chair. The main focus of the Chair is the promotion of research and education in the field of Sustainability Science. Being a paradigm shift of approach from awareness and understanding of general environmental education to involvement, participation and problem solving, the chair has undertake Action Research Project in different ecosystems of the country. Besides ecological and environmental dimensions, by looking into the economic, social and political dimensions, the overall objective of the chair is to improve the quality of life and life management. The new Chair would give a new momentum to the national movement for Sustainable Development, in which large scale public interest has been generated, due to widespread environmental concerns at the local and global levels. It would also provide input in national and international policies on Sustainable Development.
Objectives
Promote Education for Sustainable Development and its components five Es viz Ecology, Economics, Energy, Equity and Employment. Undertake Field Based Action Research Programmes in seven Major Ecosystems with a focus on pro-nature, pro-poor, pro-women and pro-employment under the theme of Sustainable Development.

Create Education and Training Material for Sustainable Development with reference to the above components based on field projects. Sustainable Development Lecture series These lecture series aimed at initiating general awareness and public debate on issues, challenges and solutions for sustainable development. I. Post Graduate Diploma in Sustainability Science (PGDSS) Programme Objectives: Enhance awareness and impact knowledge on urgent measures to be taken to limit population explosion, unsustainable lifestyle, and generation of non-and slowly recyclable-waste, synthetic chemicals. Transform green revolution into evergreen revolution so that agriculture is no longer a destroyer of forests and biodiversity. Put ecology in the centre of economic development.
Eligibility Requirements: All graduates from social and natural sciences streams Policy makers, administrators, scientists and educators as well as general public interested in paradigm shift from the present unsustainable to sustainable development. II. Appreciation Programme on Sustainability Science (APSS) Programme Objectives: The core objective of this programme is to build the capacity of policy makers, administrators, scientists and educators as well as the general public in the science and art of environmentally, economically and socially sustainable development. The programme will help the participants to develop and Agenda 21 Plan of Action for their respective village/town/city. To help those involved in agriculture to launch an era of ever-green revolution which can help to enhance productivity in perpetuity without ecological harm.
Eligibility Requirements: The programme is open to the candidates who are Graduate in any discipline or its equivalent from any recognized University. The preference will be given to the post graduate scholar, scientists and policy makers working in the areas of agriculture, rural development, environmental science and sustainable development. Leadership Programme on Nutrition Security & Sustainable Development (LPNSSD) Programme Objectives: This Nutrition Security Programme is intended to sensitise and guide policy and programme leaders to rely more on evidence based programming for achieving nutrition security and sustainable development. Eligibility Requirements: The programme is open to candidates who are graduates or equivalent in any discipline from any recognized University. There is a special focus on candidates working in the health and nutrition sector, including policy makers and programme implementers, civil society and public health nutrition professionals. IV. Appreciation Programme on Sustainable Management of Wetlands (APSMW) Programme Objectives: To provide introduction to the importance of wetlands, the cause of their degradation, restoration efforts and sustainable management. To enhance awareness on the role of wetlands on social, cultural and livelihood dimensions of the dependent communities. To build capacity to meet the challenges of global warming, sea lever rise and safeguarding live and livelihoods of the coastal communities. To enhance preparedness to mitigate harmful influence of changes in hydrological conditions due to altered rainfall both in pattern and intensity. To emphasize the uniqueness of the below sea level farming in Kuttanad, Kerala, as an example of traditional adaptation to sea level rise elsewhere.

V. Appreciation Programme on Sustainable Management of Ganga A Scientific Approach (APSMG) Programme Objectives: To create awareness about the significance of National river Ganga and its connectivity with our civilization and culture; To specify the source, origin and journey of the Ganga tributaries, upstream and downstream linkages; To characterize the Indo-Gangetic Plains covering agriculture, industrial development, ecology and environment aspects and issues thereof; To identify and analyse issues related to: 1) Public health water and vector-borne diseases, sanitation and waste disposal systems 2) Economy 3) Livelihood security 4) Demographic dimensions; To paraphrase the scope for research and development, and use of technologies; To summarise various measures for capacity-building for implementation of various programmes largely covering the above objectives; To illustrate socio-cultural aspects and issues related to policies, programmes legislations, regulations and various nodal institutional arrangements; and To analyse the role of public, media (electronic and print), NGOs, research and academic institutions, industrial houses and other stake holders.
Eligibility Requirements: The eligibility for joining this course would be a Graduation degree in any subject. The post graduate students, researchers, scientists, engineers, medical doctors, stake holders, policy makers, administrators and other professionals with requisite educational qualifications will be given preference. VI. Leadership Programme on Himalayan Ecosystems (LPHECO) Programme Objectives: To sensitize and strengthen awareness about the Himalayan Ecosystems in the context of Sustainable Development. To link and evolve the linkages of livelihood and ecological security in the mountain region To improve the awareness among the stakeholders about the impact of climate change and management.

IGNOU is a Central University established by an Act of Parliament in 1985. IGNOU Degrees/Diplomas/Certificates are recognised by all the members of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and are at par with Degrees/Diplomas/Certificates of all Indian Universities/Deemed Universities/Institutions as per UGC.
