The Shrieking Eel Scarf

I dont know if its just me, but it seems like every scarf I wear insists on being anywhere but actually around my neck. Imagine holding a cranky toddler who is begging to be in the arms of anybody else, reaching and squirming away from you, twisting and wanting down. It is a constant battle.

I was forced to design this. Here was my criteria: 1. Triangular (to achieve the bandana look) 2. Really long tails for wrapping around and draping in front 3. Garter stitch to keep it from curling (and for a faster knit)

No safety pins, no bulky knots, no cranky toddlers.

The scarf is knit from left to right instead of top to bottom. The first stitch you cast on forms the tail that gradually increases on one edge to reach a center point and then decreases back along the same edge to form opposite tail.

Ready?
US 10 straight or circular needles 175 yards of Heavy worsted yarn (like 2 balls of Nashua Wooly Stripes)
Cast on 1 stitch. Yep, a single slip knot hanging on your needle. Row 1: KFB (knit through the front and back of stitch) (2 sts) Knit 5 rows 6th row: K1, KFB (3 sts)

*Knit 9 rows 10th row: K to last 2 sts, KFB, K1 Rep from * until 10 sts on needle. *Knit 7 rows 8th row: K to last 2 sts, KFB, K1 Rep from * until 15 sts on needle. *Knit 5 rows 6th row: K to last 2 sts, KFB, K1 Rep from * until 19 sts on needle. *Knit 3 rows 4th row: K to last 2 sts, KFB, K1 Rep from * until 23 sts on needle. *Knit 1 row 2nd row: K to last 2 sts, KFB, K1 Rep from * until 28 sts on needle. You have now reached the center point. Scarf should measure 27 Decrease as follows: *Knit 1 row 2nd row: K to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1 Rep from * until 23 sts remain. *Knit 3 rows 4th row: K to last 3 sts K2tog, K1 Rep from * until 19 sts remain. *Knit 5 rows 6th row: K to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1 Rep from * until 15 sts remain. *Knit 7 rows 8th row: K to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1 Rep from * until 10 sts remain. *Knit 9 rows 10th row: K to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1 Rep from * until 3 sts remain. Knit 5 rows 6th row: K1, K2tog K2 tog. Break yarn, loop through last stitch, and tie off!

I added a sassy fringe to mine by cutting 10 pieces of yarn, putting two together, folding them in half and looping them straight onto the edge using what looks like a cow hitch knot. Ive also made a version with pillow tassels fastened to each of the tails and one on the point. The Internet has some great tutorials for both of these methods.
