FIND YOUR GOLD MINE in the Moneysaver reader ads! Whether youre buying or selling, look through the pages of the Moneysaver Shopping Guide and Moneysaver Shopping News...discover the hidden treasures! CELEBRITY EXTRA By Cindy Elavsky Q: I love watching one of my favorite classic TV shows, Designing Women, in reruns whenever I get the chance. Ive decided to ask Santa for the boxed sets on DVD, but can only find seasons one through four. Will season five be out before the holidays? -- Jeanne C., Conyers, Ga. A: You, and the rest of us Designing Women fans, are in luck -season five was released on DVD Dec. 6, right in the nick of time for Jolly Ole St. Nick to place a copy in your stocking. Season five begins with Charlene enrolling in college, Suzanne accidentally bidding on a date with Anthony, Mary Jo deciding to want a baby, and Julia secretly moonlighting as a nightclub songstress. The four-disc set includes all 24 original episodes -- with all the hairspray and shoulder pads that that entails. This season is also the last to include original cast members Jean Smart and Delta Burke, who left before season six to be replaced by Jan Hooks (who stayed for seasons six and seven) and Julia Duffy (who was in season six only). *** Q: It seems like Ive been waiting forever for the rest of the second season of Pretty Little Liars to air. Please tell me it will be back soon!

-- Erin H., via e-mail A: I love to be the bearer of good news. Your favorite bad girls, led by Aria Montgomery (played by Lucy Hale), will be back with new episodes on ABC Family on its new night starting Monday, Jan. 2. Watch as Aria, Emily, Hanna and Spencer take matters into their own hands to try to finally put a stop to their tormentor, the mysterious A. *** Q: Can you tell me if one of my favorite shows on TV will return? The Killing on AMC was riveting, and the twist at the very end of the last show blindsided me! -- Ann in Minnesota A: I was just thinking about that show the other day, so thank you for reminding me. I too love The Killing and was glued to my seat for the entire 13-episode first season. The show will be back for a second season -- thank goodness! -- most likely in late spring, although an official date has not been set. If youre not already following me on Twitter (twitter.com/celebrity_extra), you should, because I always post up-to-the-minute news on casting and returning series. *** Q: Downton Abbey on PBS was one of my favorite shows of 2011. I remember reading in your column that it would be back for a second season. If so, when? -- Donna B., Tulsa, Okla. A: Downton Abbey season two returns to PBSs Masterpiece Classic on Sunday nights beginning Jan. 9 and running through Feb. 19 at 9 p.m. ET. Maggie Smith, Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern and Dan Stevens headline the remarkable cast as World War I shakes Downton Abbey to its very foundations.

To those who feel a vacation isnt complete unless the family pet comes along, youre not alone. The U.S. Travel Association says that 49 percent of Americans feel the pet is just another member of the family and 18 percent of U.S. travelers plan to take their pets along the next time they travel. Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United States have softened laws regarding international travel with a companion animal. With the Pet Passport Scheme, or PETS, individuals may travel freely with their pets to member countries on approved carriers. Some procedures include certification of rabies vaccination and the animals microchip or tattoo number. Car trips are common forms of travel with a companion animal in tow. While many pets are easygoing, there are some who are unaccustomed to traveling with their owners and may even balk at riding along. Acclimating and protecting your pet for travel will require a little patience and some pointers. Secure the pet- Just as you would buckle up when entering the car, so should you buckle up a pet. It is important to ensure the animal is not a moving target around the car should an accident occur. Not only could you risk injury to the pet, but you also risk injury to yourself if the animal becomes a projectile. Even if an accident does not occur, a jittery pet, or one who is content to jump from back seat into the front, could prove a

distraction while driving. He or she could also bump into the gear shift or get stuck under the gas or brake pedal. It is much better to keep the pet secured. Pets may travel in a wellventilated carrier. Larger dogs may need to be belted into the car with a special dog harness. There are also barrier screens and gates that can be installed, typically in SUVs, to restrict the pet. Acclimation- Some pets just do not enjoy being placed in a carrier or riding in a car. They may need some coaxing and practice to become comfortable if a trip is planned. The ASPCA suggests getting the pet used to a longer trip by taking a series of short trips first over the course of a few days or weeks. With each trip, gradually increase time spent in the car. It may help to bring along a pet toy or blanket that is soothing to the animal, so he or she associates the car with a safe place, just like home. Even after several attempts to acclimate your pet to the idea of a car trip, the animal may still not be happy about the idea. Talk to a veterinarian about other strategies or whether a mild sedative could make the travel easier. Safety tips- Although many pet owners are aware of certain dos and donts when it comes to traveling with a pet, many still engage in behavior that could be dangerous to the animal. One of the common offenses is letting the pet ride with his or her head outside of the window. While this may seem like heaven to the dog or cat, this puts the pet at risk of being injured by flying objects, including debris in the eyes. It can also increase the risk of the animal falling out of the moving vehicle. Another mistake many people make is leaving the pet inside of a car -- even for a short duration of time. The ASPCAwarns that even with the windows open, a parked car can rapidly heat up and heatstroke can occur. A similar thing takes place in the winter with

the car getting much too cold. If you anticipate having to make stops, be sure to go where you can take the pet out and along with you. Comfort and care- An animal out of his or her environment or element could become skittish. Try to keep a pets feeding schedule as close to normal as possible. This will minimize the chances of discomfort or even digestive aggravation. Bring along bottled water or tap water from home because drinking water from an unfamiliar area could result in unwanted digestive distress, which could prove uncomfortable for pet and owner alike. As an added precaution, you may want to invest in rubberized floor liners and waterproof seat covers, says the ASPCA. This helps if the animal gets carsick or has an accident. Removable seat covers can also prove advantageous for collecting fur and keeping the interior of the car less messy than need be. Identification- It is important to always carry proper identification for your pet, as well as documentation of vaccinations. For those who have not yet microchipped their companion animal, now may be the time to do so. The microchip is a very small device implanted under the skin of the pet, usually by the scruff of the neck. It will transmit contact information when a specialized transmitter is waved over the microchip. Theres also the old-fashioned method of having your dog or cat collared with an ID tag. Using this in conjunction with a leash and harness will help reduce the chances of losing your pet while on the road. GLAUCOMA DOES NOT ALWAYS EXHIBIT SYMPTOMS As the human body ages, certain things might not work as well as they used to. Though no two individuals are the same, there are certain things people expect to deal with as they age. Changes in vision are one thing many people associate with aging. Some people maintain perfect vision throughout their lives, while others vision deteriorates and conditions begin to develop. Though not exclusive to the elderly, glaucoma is one such condition many seniors must deal with. But even though risk for glaucoma increases as a person ages, that doesnt mean younger men and women should not familiarize themselves with this condition and learn its symptoms and characteristics. In fact, glaucoma can be present for years before its recognized. This only further highlights the importance of understanding this condition so, should it appear, it can be effectively treated as soon as possible. What is glaucoma? Glaucoma is a term used to refer to a group of conditions that can cause damage to the optic nerve. The optic nerve is responsible for carrying visual information from the eye to the brain, and oftentimes optic nerve damage is a result of increased pressure in the eye. In the United States, glaucoma is the second most common cause of blindness. In Canada, the Glaucoma Research Society of Canada reports that more than 400,000 Canadians have glaucoma today. What role does intra-ocular pressure play? The eyes are filled with fluids that help maintain pressure in the eye. That pressure is called intraocular pressure, or IOP. IOP is not a bad thing, but high IOP is a risk factor for glaucoma. Measuring IOP is fairly easy. Doctors will use a tonometer to measure IOP, but men and women should know that normal IOP does not necessarily mean a person does not have glaucoma, nor does high IOP mean a person does have glaucoma. While high IOP is a risk factor for glaucoma and controlling IOPis a focus of glaucoma therapy, there is more to diagnosing and treating glaucoma than just focusing on IOP. What causes high IOP? The eye produces a fluid called the aqueous humor which is used to bathe and nourish the various parts of the eye. This fluid typically flows out of the eye through channels in the front of the eye in an area called the anterior chamber angle. When the flow of the aqueous humor is blocked or slowed, the fluid gets trapped in the eye and then IOP builds, at which point damage to the optic nerve can occur. Are all cases of glaucoma the same? Not all cases of glaucoma are the same. In fact, there are four major types of glaucoma. * Open-angle, or chronic, glaucoma: Open-angle glaucoma is the most common type of glaucoma. The cause is unknown, but an increase in eye pressure occurs slowly over time as the pressure starts to push on the optic nerve and the retina at the back of the eye. This type of glaucoma tends to run in families, so men and women who have a parent or grandparent who has had open-angle glaucoma should not miss appointments with his or her eye doctor, even if vision seems normal. This is especially important because most people with open-angle glaucoma have no symptoms until they begin to lose vision, though gradual loss of peripheral vision may occur. * Angle-closure, or acute, glaucoma: Angle-closure glaucoma occurs when the aqueous humor is suddenly blocked. This is very noticeable, as it causes instant and severe pain as the IOP quickly increases. Risk for angle-closure glaucoma increases for those who have already had it one eye. Symptoms include decreased or cloudy vision, nausea and vomiting, seeing rainbow-like halos around lights, and reddening of the eye.

Do you ever have trouble communicating? A couple visits a lawyer about getting a divorce. And the lawyer asks the husband, Do you have grounds? We have about an acre and a half, says the husband. No, thats not what I mean, says the lawyer. Do you have a grudge? No, says the husband, we have an oversized carport. No, thats not what I mean, says the lawyer and he changes his approach. OK, does she beat you up? Nope, Im the first one up every morning, the husband says. So why do you want a divorce? the lawyer asks in desperation. I dont, the husband says,. My wife does. She says we have trouble communicating. Do you ever have trouble communicating with your spouse or a coworker? The key to excellent communication is listening first. POPULAR HEALTH MYTHS DEBUNKED Well-meaning parents or grandparents often tell children not to do something with the warning that a serious health implication could result. Kids often take their elders at their word. But some of these warnings bear more truth than others. Heres the scoop on some of the more common misconceptions. Myth: Swallowed chewing gum stays in the stomach for seven

years. While chewing gum cannot be digested and is meant to be chewed and not swallowed, accidentally swallowing a piece here and there wont cause major issues. Thats because the gum will simply pass through the digestive system whole and come out with stool. If a large amount of gum is swallowed in a short period of time, then there could be issues, including constipation and intestinal blockage in children. Myth: If you keep your eyes crossed too long, they will get stuck that way. The muscles in the eye are just like any muscles elsewhere in the body. Although they may tire and get sore, they are relatively resilient and can take a lot of wear and tear. Crossing your eyes may tax these muscles, but you wont do any permanent harm. Rest assured that crossing the eyes will not leave them stuck that way. Myth: Going outside with wet hair will make you sick. Although you will feel colder stepping outside with a part of your body wet, it wont make you more susceptible to catching a cold. Researchers at the Common Cold Research Unit in England once tested a group of volunteers who were given the cold virus. One half of the group stayed in a warm room, while the others took a bath and stood wet in a hallway

for a half hour. The wet group didnt catch more colds than the dry. Myth: Covering your head is most important because you lose 75 percent of your body heat through it. This calculation is more for an infant whose head makes up a greater percentage of his or her body. In an adult, the figure is closer to 10 percent. Heat can escape from any exposed area of the body. Therefore, it is helpful to bundle up all areas of the body when spending time outdoors in the cold weather. Myth: Dont swim right after eating. The basis of this mantra is that when digesting food, the digestive system pulls blood away from the muscles and the idea is that you could cramp up and drown. While you may have less energy to swim vigorously, chances are you wont be so weak as to drown. Although many health myths prevail, knowing the truth can help parents educate their children better about which behaviors are safe and which are risky.

Interest in this unique wildlife viewing opportunity is growing steadily on the worldwide web. The best way to get people acquainted with wildlife and to help them further appreciate its importance is to give them a front-row seat to the action, said Carl G. Roe, Game Commission executive director. Thats what our new web cams and live-feed broadcasts are doing, using technology to connect people with wildlife. We began our wild cam broadcasts a few weeks ago with snow geese scenes from off Willow Point at our Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area. Look for more exciting locations to be wired for broadcast after the barn owls to help our website followers get more acquainted with and closer to Pennsylvania wildlife. It is part of our commitment to be the first and best source of information on Pennsylvania wildlife. The PGC Wild Cam section of the website was created to help people develop a greater appreciation of wildlife via broadcasts from places theyd rarely - or would want to - visit throughout the Commonwealth. Partnering with Pix Controller of Murrysville, and WildEarth of South Africa, the Game Commission is stationing remote video cameras at wildlife destinations that transmit a wireless cellular data signal to a video server that, in turn, streams the live footage

been associated mostly with southern tier counties and have been classified as a maintenance concern species in the states Wildlife Action Plan since 2006. In 2005, the Game Commission used its regional wildlife diversity biologists to begin a Barn Owl Conservation Initiative, which seeks to study the biology and ecology of Pennsylvanias barn owls to better understand and conserve this species. Biologists conducted site visits to determine barn owl activity, monitor active nest sites, conduct outreach to landowners, and distribute and/or install barn owl boxes. Barn owls are banded to provide information on longevity, causes of mortality, and dispersal. In 2010 (the latest year which information is available), biologists confirmed 62 active barn owl nests - 12 were new sites - bringing the total number of nest sites to 138 since searches began in 2005. In 2010, biologists banded 254 nestlings and three adults at 52 nest sites as part of the Barn Owl Initiative. Clutch sizes ranged from 1 to 10. To date, 32 banded barn owls have been recovered; 22 dispersed from their natal site an average distance of at least 58 miles. For more information on barn owls and the Barn Owl Initiative, visit the Game Commissions website and enter barn owl in the search engine in the right column. Since it went live, the barn owl box signal has been strong, much to the satisfaction of viewers. But as well-designed as this system is, there have been and will be times when the signal is interrupted or lost. It also may take several minutes for the live feed to appear in the viewer window. These situations are an inherent part of webcasting, but hopefully will become less and less an issue for viewers as systems are perfected. This whole undertaking involves cutting-edge technology from the moment the system collects the image until it is requested by your computer. The Perry County nest box, fitted with an unobtrusive camera, had seven eggs. Two more were added from another Perry County nest box that had to be removed because it was impeding storage in a silo. Two other eggs from this troubled nest went to another barn owl nest box in Juniata County. The eggs from the donor nest box were maintained by Zoo America in Hershey until they were placed in new nest boxes. Barn owls are found almost worldwide and have 36 subspecies. Although they are globally secure, in Pennsylvania and elsewhere in North America significant population declines have occurred over the past several decades, likely from losses of grassland habitat, potential nest sites and prey species. Since the mid 1960s, barn owl numbers have dropped nearly two percent annually in North America, according to Breeding Bird Survey data. In Pennsylvania, barn owls have

WHAT BEGINNERS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT WEIGHT LIFTING In the past, lifting weights was something few outside the world of professional body building would do. Even professional baseball players of yesteryear shied away from the weight room, a fact that might be hard to believe when looking at todays pro baseball players, many of whom look more like professional wrestlers than those who earn their money playing Americas pastime. But the appearance of todays baseball players brings to mind more than the sports recent steroids epidemic. In fact, todays ballplayers are a small reflection of societys shift toward accepting weight lifting as an integral step to achieving optimal health. Lifting weights helps improve metabolism and build lean muscle. But those new to weight lifting should note that it is not a hobby that can be jumped right into. Instead, consider the following tips to ensure your workout goes smoothly, and consult with a personal trainer whenever you have a question. * Get your heart pumping first and foremost. Its not ideal to walk straight to the bench press and start hammering away when you get to the gym. Instead, do some light cardiovascular activity to get your heart pumping. Five minutes of mild to medium cardiovascular activity should be the first thing you do, following by some stretching to make sure your body is loose. Once youve finished your mild cardio and stretching, you can then begin to work with weights. * Keep your movements nice and easy. When lifting weights, your movements should be as smooth as possible. Also, take your time between repetitions, allowing your movements to remain smooth from rep to rep. Any

jerky movements or working too quickly is just putting unnecessary strain on your muscles, possibly even taxing a muscle youre not working out. Its not uncommon for novice weight lifters, for example, to pull a muscle in their back when theyre not even working their back. Thats most likely due to fast, jerky movements that should be avoided. * Remember, youre not underwater, so dont hold your breath. Beginners to weight lifting tend to think theyre underwater, holding their breath during sets. This is potentially very dangerous. When you hold your breath while lifting weights, you are denying your muscles much-needed oxygenated blood. If the muscles are denied this blood, blood vessels can burst and you might even suffer a hernia. So its important to remember to breathe freely when lifting weights. * Dont get fixated on how much youre lifting. While your ultimate goal might be to be as big as a professional wrestler, you must realize this will certainly not happen overnight. Beginners should take it easy when starting a weight lifting program, first lifting light weights and getting the correct motions down pat before adding any weight. You should be able to feel the muscles working, but dont get too preoccupied with how much youre lifting until youve mastered the correct motions and feel ready to add more weight. * Work all muscles equally. The body has many muscles, all of which can benefit from weight training. Ignoring one for the benefit of another is not only unhealthy, but it will manifest itself physically as well, with your body eventually looking disproportioned. Pay equal attention to all muscle groups, balancing your workouts so your whole body is benefitting from your new lifestyle.

COUCH THEATER -- DVD PREVIEWS By Sam Struckhoff PICKS OF THE WEEK Midnight in Paris (PG-13) -- Gil and Ines (Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams) are an engaged couple visiting Paris with family. Gil is a writer struggling with his novel in an age that doesnt seem to value the kind of writing hes passionate about. Gil takes to roaming the city at night and winds up in the 1920s, surrounded by the writers and artists of his favorite era. Its more whimsical than cynical, and Wilsons awkward charm makes a perfect vehicle for Woody Allen. The romance of the film revolves around the fantasy of escapism and beauty of the real world when we have the right lens. Sure theres time-travel, but this movie is less about wormholes and more about falling in love with a city. Warrior (PG-13) -- One might think Warrior is what happens when all those familiar sports-drama cliches are transplanted onto mixed martial arts, and this is true, but by the end of the movie it wont matter. Like a fighter using tried-and-true moves, execution is what counts. Brendan (Joel Edgerton) is a teacher and ex-fighter stepping back into the ring to support his family in hard times. His younger brother, Tommy (Tom Hardy), is an ex-Marine who tries to find his way through the sport. Add one washed-up old father/trainer (Nick Nolte), and its easy to see how this movie is conditioned for climactic ground-and-pound weighted with personal and family baggage. Dolphin Tale (PG) -- While it may have some of the tone and outward trappings of a Hallmark Channel TV movie, this family film based on a true story is surprisingly watchable and uplifting. A boy finds a dolphin whose tail is caught in a crab trap, and he becomes the anchor of the group of people who make it their mission to bring it back to health. Of course, such a family film has a warm, cheesy center -- apparently a dolphin with an amputated tail has a lot to do with family values. The gags are slow-pitch -- even for kids -- and Harry Connick Jr. plays the handsomest marine biologist ever. Perhaps this one wont find a spot in the video collection, but the family can get a night of warm and fuzzy feelings from this slightly sappy creature feature. 2011-2012

NEWS FROM NEW YORK STATE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION For more information contact: Lori Severino, 518-402-8000 DEC Advises: Precautions for Homeowners to Protect Properties from Wildfire Damage Albany, NY (04/10/2012)(readMedia)- Homeowners in rural and suburban areas that lie alongside open and forested lands should take precautions to protect their homes from being damaged or destroyed in a wildfire, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Forest Rangers advised today. Over the years, many people who enjoy the remoteness and scenic beauty of New Yorks rural settings have built primary residences or seasonal homes adjacent to or in areas susceptible to wildland fires. Homes and other buildings in these areas are referred to as the Wildland/Urban Interface. The wildland/urban interface refers to any location where human structures and woodlands or other open areas intermingle, allowing a wildland fire to reach beyond trees, brush, and other natural fuels to ignite homes and other structures. Recent wildland fires throughout New York and the northeast have threatened and destroyed homes. An overwhelming number of these fires are human caused, such as brush burning, unattended campfires, discarded fireplace ashes, etc. Generally, these fires occur in residential areas putting not only the owners property at risk but their neighbors as well, and every year homes, camps and sheds are damaged or destroyed by wildfires. DEC Forest Rangers, the NY Firewise Council and the national Firewise Communities program are working to inform New Yorkers about wildland fire safety and prevention through the New York Firewise program. Homeowners can take steps to reduce the risk of damage from wildfires before one ever occurs. When constructing, renovating, landscaping and maintaining the property around the home, consider the following wildfire risk reduction strategies: Home Construction & Maintenance Use non flammable materials for roof and exterior walls;Use fire retardant finishes on exterior wood;Use double paned or tempered glass in windows;Enclose eaves, fascias, soffits, and vents;Remove tree limbs from overhangs and attachments;Keep gutters and roofs clean of twigs, leaves, and pine needles. Landscaping (within 30 feet of your home & camp and their porches & decks) Use fire resistant plants, landscaping materials, and accessories;Keep area clear of all dead vegetation and other flammable debris;Remove limbs on trees up to 10 ft. from ground;Maintain space between trees;Regularly mow, prune, and water lawns and gardens;Do not place propane tanks under porches or decks, or directly against your home; andDo not store firewood adjacent to your home April through September. For additional information on protecting homes and/or camps from wildfires, contact a local DEC office or visit www.newyorkfirewise.org. fb Quote: A lie has speed, but truth has endurance. *** When you stretch the truth, watch out for the snapback. *** -Edgar J. MONEYSAVER SHOPPING GUIDE

APRIL 17, 2012

These pages are from the old Grit Story Section magazine dated July 16, 1916. They were brought into the Moneysaver by Bill Vennard of Kansas Hollow Rd. Bill found this old magazine and others attached to the walls of the James Fronczak house, in Kossuth, while doing construction work. He believes this house was at one time the old switchboard station for the telephone company.

NARCONON RECOVERY TIP #68 Know What You Know Each person carries with them the power of observation. What is true for you are things you have observed yourself and having the courage to say what you have observed is a big part of your own personal integrity. When someone is addicted, drugs can take away the ability to observe and see clearly. With this comes a loss of courage and personal integrity. When a person has recovered from addiction these things come back. The person can start to see again, to observe and to know what they know. For more information or to get help for yourself or a loved one that is struggling with a drug or alcohol addiction, call 800-468-6933 or log onto www.stopaddiction.com. fb
