BUILD academic expertise

Career Reengineering Program students enroll in MIT undergraduate or graduate courses to study new elds, gain fresh skills, and explore emerging careers. Genetics, Molecular structure of Biological Materials, and Sustainable Energy are examples of courses chosen by recent students who work side by side with world-class faculty and students. The Project, which includes a research paper and presentation, taps the expertise of a faculty member and surveys recent developments. It also brings students up to date on their eld of interest and sharpens their ability to communicate ideas to multiple audiences.

The MIT course gave me the professional environment where I could NETWORK with fellow researchers from school as well as from the industry and have FRUITFUL DISCUSSIONS on the latest research. Sunita | Class of 2007

The CAREER-FOCUSED WORKSHOPS helped me enormously in fact, they were the most important benets to me. Silke | Class of 2008

WORK in your next eld

In the spring, participants engage in either industry internships or research projects in their area of interest. These experiences are hands-on, practical exposures that can document high interest and current knowledge in advanced elds. Internships in greater Boston-area businesses or nonprots allow students to learn on the job alongside industry experts. These exposures facilitate networking and can establish sources for references and future job tips. Recent students have interned at major Boston hospitals, a portfolio management rm, the Department of Transportation, an analytical instruments company, and a lean manufacturing enterprise. Some students choose to work with an MIT faculty member on research projects. Whether students are working in a lab or gathering data in the eld, they are acquiring skills essential to their next position.

My project was an in-depth examination of the use of digital signal processing in stock market applications. It gave me new INSIGHT on the state of the art and gave me new direction for my research and ENTREPRENEURIAL EFFORTS. Ken | Class of 2007

Is this program right for you?

The Career Reengineering Program is an academically rigorous program that requires rapid engagement with new knowledge and an entrepreneurial interest in new opportunities. Successful applicants have strong academic credentials and professional experience. They have at least a bachelors degree; some have graduate degrees. Many left demanding technical or scientic jobs for personal reasons and are now preparing to reenter their elds. Sample students: The drive to learn about nanotechnology and selfassembling materials brought Charles back to MIT after a 20-year career in advanced materials processing and manufacturing technologies. Sunita built a solid career in analytical chemistry in her native India. At MIT, she was able to extend her knowledge to the pharmaceutical industry by learning the newest methods in drug analysis and chromatography separation techniques. Ramon, an information systems architect, was able to shift his career to economic development by gaining new skills through his fall course, Regional Socioeconomic Impact Analyses and Modeling, and his internship at a global development institute.

The participants made a cohesive group that created a SENSE OF IDENTITY, belonging, support, friendship, and inspiration. Farzana | Class of 2008

A student story
For Farzana, the programs time commitment, afliation with MIT, and focus on professional and personal development was just right. The goal was to brush up my scientic knowledge and reenter the job market with renewed condence, she says. Through a course on Clinical Trials in Biomedical Enterprises and an internship at a major cancer institute, she became involved in several neuro-oncology clinical trials. This experience not only helped her transfer skills from her previous eld, but also led directly to her new full-time position at the cancer institute.

IT WAS AN AMAZINGLY INTENSIVE LEARNING EXPERIENCE FOR ME, FARZANA SAYS. I HAD NEVER LEARNED SO MUCH IN SO LITTLE TIME.
