Pay tribute to Carroll School at open house

Pay tribute and celebrate 73 years of Building Memories at Carroll School from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 19. The open house will begin with a welcome at 2 p.m. and will include self-guided building tours. Seniors join Hall of Fame

Barbara Magsig (center), was surprised to see her daughters Joyce Barnes, of Port Clinton, and Sue Jacques, of Oregon. Although the pair tried to play off their presence at the event, Magsig was quick to call them out in front of the crowd for lying to her. It was supposed to be a surprise but of course she wasnt where she was supposed to be, Jacques said with a laugh. Magsigs daughters nominated her for the Senior Hall of Fame. The 2012 Ottawa County Senior Hall of Fame Awards were presented during the annual Senior Day celebration at Camp Perry on Wednesday, May 9. Recipients received a plaque commemorating their service to the seniors of Ottawa County. The recipients for this years award include: Shirley Pryor representing the Danbury Senior Center; Barbara Magsig, representing the Elmore Golden Oldies Senior Center; Bernice Runner, representing the Genoa Senior Center; June Kwaitkowski, representing Port Clinton Senior Center; and Anne Parker, representing the Putin-Bay Senior Center. This year, two seniors who were very active in the Harbor Lights Senior Center in Oak Harbor were also honored. Charles Chuck Lenke received the Community Service Award and Harold Lewis received the Certificate of Achievement Award.
Below are excerpts from a letter sent to Carroll School by Judge Donald Wargowsky. The entire letter will be on display at the A Building of Memories Tribute Sunday at the school. Carroll Township and Friends: I already was a student at OHHS when the Centralized Carroll School was built. So, I never attended the Carroll School you are now memorializing and remembering. However, the three younger members of our family attended Centralized Carroll School after attending several Carroll Township one-room schools. They included twin sisters Evelyn Wargowsky Moenter (deceased), Esther Wargowsky Schlea (Aiken, S.C.) and brother Richard Wargowsky (retired Air Force Colonel now living in Alexandria, Va.). I attended three different one-room, oneteacher schools: Carrollyn where the teacher was Arvilla Beier Winters. Funny thing my only classmate was Eileen Humphrey! The second school was Oakland and my teachers there included Russell Martin and Bethal Madison. Classmates were Donna Mae Beier, Betty Rauch and Charles

Rally for the Kids

The Knoll Crest Shopping Center parking lot will be the site for a very special event this Saturday, May 19. It is a Rally for Kids in support of CASA Court Appointed Special Advocates and Joyful Connections. There will be gobs of activities for young and old alike. All of the activities for the kids will be free. The Ottawa County Sheriff s office will be there for child fingerprinting. There will also be a 5K run/ walk, a Cornhole Tournament, a sidewalk sale with 20 vendors, basket raffles, food and a Grocery Run Raffle for a 3-minute shopping spree at Bassetts Market. So, make it a point to stop by and join in the fun this Saturday.

This Sunday, May 20, from 8 a.m. to noon, the Port Clinton Elks Lodge will kick off their Sunday Breakfast series with a special fundraiser for Gene Holcomb, who was a longtime Service Manager at Gordon Cooper Motor Sales. Gene has fallen on some difficult times, losing the use of his right arm and has had both legs amputated due to diabetes. They will be serving an all-you-can-eat buffet that Sunday for just $10 with proceeds earmarked to help Gene get along just a little better in his battle with diabetes.

Air Force Airman Jackson Earl graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air EARL Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Earl will continue his training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO technical school. Jackson is the son of Jim and Cathi Muncy, of Port Clinton, and Scott and Jennifer Earl. He is a 2011 graduate of Bedford High School, Temperance, Mich. motivated individual. Hickman also noted that Nelson was deployed for Operation Iraqi Freedom throughout all of 2008. I was fortunate enough in my career to spend over 22 years as canine handler, instructor and trainer. When promoted to Chief of Police, I was faced with the decision to hand over the reins of the canine handler within the Department. Josh stepped up and I couldnt be prouder of our decision to all him that opportunity, said the chief.
Tree and Seedling Sale

Armed with aprons and smiles, Oak Harbor FFA students and Ottawa SWCD Staff packed evergreen seedlings for the Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District at Moore Orchards. The annual tree sale program has been offered to landowners for more than 35 years. Offered are varieties of evergreens saplings as well as larger hardwoods and 3-gallon shrubs. Individuals can also purchase
wildflower packets and native plant packets. The district thanks the following volunteers for helping make this program a success: Carol Benner, Moore Orchards and the following Oak Harbor FFA students: Mike Varnish, Cody Stout, Sammy Hamilton, Kyle Cornelius, Corb Wiener, Caleb Wittman, Jonny Fickert and Chad Hofacker. Planning meeting set for The Gathering

More than a decade ago, out of the work of the Community Health Ministry Team, a vital ministry known as The Gathering was born. The Gathering has served the needs of the community by providing a free meal on the last Thursday of the month. It has enabled the hungry to eat and the lonely to enjoy a time of fellowship. Many people young and old have experienced the joy derived from serving others as this meal has been planned, prepared and served. In the last month or so, two key individuals who have played significant roles in this ministry have developed medical issues that will not permit them to provide that same kind of excellent leadership. It is time now to assemble a group that shares a passion for The Gathering in order to create a new plan for the next decade of this ministry. 2012 Ottawa County Police Memorial Day

The annual Ottawa County Police Officers Memorial Day Ceremony will be held at noon Thursday, May 17. This years ceremony will be hosted by the Genoa Police Department and will be held at the Allen Clay Joint Fire Department, Station 3, 101 E. Sixth Street, Genoa. The annual ceremony honors fallen law enforcement officers from Ottawa County and pays tribute to officers nationwide who dedicate their lives to the safety of their communities. Guest speaker will be retired judge and former speaker of the house Charles F. Kurfess.
Picnic in the Park for Relay For Life

There will be a Picnic in the Park event on May 19 at Veterans Memorial Park on Washington Street in Genoa from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. A barbecue chicken dinner a half chicken, potato salad, cole slaw, roll and brownie will be available for $8. Advance tickets for the dinner are recommended as very limited tickets will be offered for purchase on Saturday. Learn to Fly Day this weekend

The world of flight offers fun, freedom and experiences unlike anything else in the world. And youre invited to participate as Tin Goose Chapter 1247 of the Experimental Aircraft Association hosts an International Learn to Fly Day event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 19, at the Erie-Ottawa Regional Airport in Port Clinton. International Learn to Fly Day was created to invite people interested in the world of flight to discover more by meeting local aviators and discovering the initial steps toward living the dream of personal flight. Nearly 600,000 people from all walks of life in the U.S. are licensed pilots, but millions more have dreamed of joining that group. During EAA Chapter 1247s Learn to Fly Day event, which is free of charge, guest will discover more about how learning to fly is not as time-consuming or expensive as you might think. Young Eagle flights for youth age 8-17 and Discovery flights for adults will be available. Visitors will also have the opportunity to meet the local airport staff, talk to flight instructors and EAA members and learn more about other aviation opportunities such as joining a flying club. Members sought for Catawba zoning boards

Members are needed for the Catawba Island Township zoning boards. If you have interest in serving on the Zoning Commission or Board of Zoning Appeals, call Trustee Matt Montowski at 419-262-0033 or email Matt at [email protected] to learn more about the activities of these boards. The Zoning Commission meets at 7:30 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of each month and is responsible for amendments to the zoning resolution and map. The Board of Zoning Appeals meets at 7:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday each month and hears applications for appeals, variances and conditional uses. To be considered for a board position your residence of record must be Catawba Island Township and an application for appointed positions is available at the Township Zoning Department or email [email protected]. Applications should be returned to the Zoning Inspector. Currently there is an opening for an alternate position on the Zoning Commission and the Board of Zoning Appeals. Both the Zoning Commission and BZA are comprised of five members appointed by the Board of Township Trustees. Each member is appointed for a five-year term. Each term is staggered to have one term ending each calendar year. Members may be reappointed by the Board of Township Trustees. Otterbein North Shore, located in LakesideMarblehead, has planned an evening of fun and entertainment to celebrate 100 years of serving older adults throughout western Ohio. The event will include hors doeuvres, silent and live auctions and entertainment by the Michael Shirtz Quartet. Donations, including a cottage in Lakeside, a Lakeshores condo, tickets to an Indians game, restaurant gift certificates, original paintings by local artists and much more will be among the live and silent auction items. The Ida Rupp Public Library will be moving its records to a new software system the first week of June. This will cause a few days of limited access to catalog and patron records, however, the library will remain open, the Internet will be available and many of the online resources will also still be available. There will be a few days that staff will only be able to check out to those with their library cards. How will this affect library patrons? Patrons using the My List feature should make copies of these lists now as they will not be transferred to the new online catalog. The Walleye Festival weekend marks the beginning of the busy summer season and Port Clinton kicks it off with the Main Street Port Clinton Walleye Festival and family friendly events.

The Main Street Port Clinton Walleye Festival runs Thursday, to Monday, May 24-28, at Waterworks Park in Port Clinton. For a complete listing of all events and activities, visit www.walleyefestival.com. event and includes eight 3-oz cups of craft beer and pub snacks. Presentations by Distributor and live entertainment by Johnny Rodriguez. All attendees can be entered for raffle prizes for no additional cost. A limited number of tickets are available. Presale tickets are on sale at the Main Street Port Clinton office and Slaters Madison Street Pub in downtown Port Clinton, Waldo Peppers at 4046 E. Harbor Road, The Depot at 117 N. Monroe St. in Fremont and Time Out Sports Bar at 2005 Lake St., also in Fremont. Area Beer Club Organizers also have tickets. Boats will be assembling on the Portage River close to Coastal Marine, traveling under the Lift Bridge, past Waterworks Park and the Walleye Festival to City Beach and returning to the Portage River. Duck Pluck
The second annual Duck Pluck will be held on Monday, May 28, at Main Street Port Clintons 32nd anniversary of the Walleye Festival. Five hundred rubber ducks will be dipping, diving and drifting in a hot tub all weekend long enjoying music in the entertainment tent. The ducks will be plucked beginning at 11 a.m. on Monday. Similar to a reverse raffle, the last duck plucked will receive onethird of the total jackpot. Other ducks plucked during the reverse raffle will win gift certificates and other prizes from area businesses. Duck Pluck tickets are $10 each. The winner could take home $1,667 if all 500 tickets are sold. Participants do not need to be present to win. Winners will be contacted by phone the week of May 28. The Duck Pluck is a fundraiser for Main Street Port Clinton and its effort to promote our historic downtown. Toledo Walleye
Spike the yellow walleye, the mascot for the Toledo Walleye hockey team, will be swimming from Toledo to Port Clinton to attend the 32nd anniversary of the Main Street Port Clinton Walleye Festival. Spike, who will be 3 years old in July, will arrive at Waterworks Park on Saturday, May 26. Spike will be swimming in the Grande Parade that begins at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The Toledo Walleye is a professional ice hockey team that is an affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks of the NHL.

Rockets win SBC title for first time in 20 years

BY YANEEK SMITH With a 9-4 victory over Huron on Friday, the Oak Harbor baseball team clinched its first Sandusky Bay Conference title in 20 years. In a back-and-forth game that saw the lead change hands several times, the Rockets took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth when Brian Mallernee hit a liner up the middle that Huron center fielder Troy Delamatre overplayed, allowing Mallernee to advance to third. Delamatres throw to third was off the mark and Mallernee was able to score, giving Oak Harbor a 4-3 lead. In the next inning, with his team holding to a 6-4 advantage, Mallernee hit a three-run home run to push the lead to 9-4 and put the game out of reach. Mallernee finished with four RBIs and A.J. Cecil finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs while Mark Konieczny reached base three times and scored twice. Josh Graber got the win on the mound, allowing three runs on six hits in five innings of work. He struck out four batters and walked two. With one game remaining, the Rockets stand 17-8 overall and 11-2 in the conference. OAK HARBOR 5 SMCC 2 Led by Brian Mallernee, who hit a two-run triple and got the win on the mound, Oak Harbor defeated, St. Mary CC, 5-2, in SBC play on Monday. Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the third, the Rockets took the lead for good when Brian Mallernee tripled and drove in Mark Konieczny and A.J. Cecil to give Oak Harbor a 2-1 advantage. Joey Mallernee and Cory Grotz added one RBI apiece later in the inning to push the lead to 4-1, and St. Mary CC never threatened from that point forward. In addition to driving in the go-ahead run, Brian Mallernee allowed two unearned runs on three hits in seven innings of work. He struck out eight and walked three to improve to 7-3 on the season. OAK HARBOR 6 PERKINS 1 In the decisive game that put them in the drivers seat for the league title, Oak Harbor defeated Perkins in dramatic fashion, 6-1, last week. Brian Mallernee gave the Rockets a 3-1 lead in the top of the sixth when he hit a three-run homer to left field. Payson Galway drove in two runs later in the inning with a base hit as Oak Harbor avenged an earlier 13-5 loss to the Pirates earlier in the season. Mark Konieczny led of the inning with a base hit and advanced to second on A.J. Cecils bunt, who was also safe at first on the play. That set things up for Mallernee, who came through with his fourth home run of the season. HURON 2 OAK HARBOR 0 (DIV. III SECTIONAL FINAL) Despite winning the league title, the Rocket baseball team lost in a Division III Sectional Final, falling, 2-0, to Huron at Bellevue High School. Oak Harbor fell behind 2-0 in the third inning and was unable to mount a serious rally, finishing with just four hits for the game, led by Mark Konieczny, who had two. Despite taking the loss, A.J. Cecil allowed two unearned runs on seven hits in seven innings of work while striking out four batters and walking one.

PERKINS 7 OAK HARBOR 2 Despite keeping the score close for most of the game, Oak Harbor fell, 7-2, to Perkins in a Division II Sectional Final at Clyde High School. The Lady Pirates took a 2-0 lead after the first inning and broke the game open with four runs in the fifth to grab a 7-0 lead. The Rockets were able to score two runs in the sixth inning but never seriously threatened. Perkins was led by Bri Whitcomb who had two hits and drove in three runs while Sam Seitz contributed two RBIs. Justine Webb had two RBIs for Oak Harbor. Kelsey Yaratch got the win for the Lady Pirates, allowing two runs on four hits in seven innings of work. OAK HARBOR 4 SMCC 1 Trailing 1-0 in the fifth inning, Oak Harbors Allison Dunn drove in two runs to give the Rockets the lead on its way to a 4-1 win over St. Mary CC. Allison Wolf and Theresa Stokes each drove in a run in the sixth inning to push the lead to 4-1.

OAK HARBOR 3 HURON 1 Behind two RBIs from Allison Wolf, Oak Harbor defeated Huron, 3-1, to gain another win in SBC play. With the Rockets leading, 1-0, in the third inning, Wolf hit a two-run single to put Oak Harbor ahead 3-0. Justine Webb provided the other RBI, and Sam Durivage got the win, allowing run on six hits in seven innings of work. PERKINS 11 OAK HARBOR 1 (5 INN.) After Oak Harbor went ahead 1-0 in the first inning, Perkins responded with three runs in the bottom-half before breaking the game open with five runs in the third inning on its way to an 11-1 win over the Rockets. Darcy Daniel and Bri Whitcomb each had three RBIs and Kelsey Yaratch got the win on the mound, pitching four innings and allowing one run.
OH girls track Lakers finish out on a high note team wins third straight SBC title
BY YANEEK SMITH BY YANEEK SMITH Over the weekend, the Oak Harbor girls track and field squad won their third consecutive Sandusky Bay Conference title at Memorial Stadium in Huron, finishing with 111 points to defeat Edison, who came in second with 98 points. Margaretta and St. Mary CC tied for third with 93 points, followed by Port Clinton (90.5), Perkins (61) and Clyde (61), who tied for sixth place, and Huron (54.5). Oak Harbor had one first-place finisher, Morgan Turnow, who won the discus with a throw of 132 feet, 9 inches. Second-place finishers included Trinity Gephart in the 1600 (5:35.91) and the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams. Gephart was also fourth in the 800 (2:33.48). Other topfinishers included Nikki Weis (3rd in the 300 hurdles), Rebekah Rayburn (3rd in the 100), Addie Barton (4th in the long jump), Sidney Allen (4th in the 200) and Cydney St. Clair (4th in the 400). The 4x200 and 4x800 relay teams also fared well, each finishing third. For the Lady Skins, Emaleigh Dunn was the lone individual to finish in first place, doing so in the shot put (4103.50).The 4x800 relay team also finished first, running a time of 10:05.74. She was also second in the discus (12700) and Heather Keck finished second in the pole vault (9-00.00). Katelyn Zam and Sara Chura finished third in the discus (118-09) and the 800 (2:32.13), respectively, and Chura also finished fourth in the 1600 (5:37.67). Meigan Day (high jump), Jessica Lorensen (pole vault), Hannah Weaver (3200) and the 4x400 relay team all finished fourth, rounding out the top finishers for Port Clinton. On the boys side, Perkins was dominant, defeating the second-place team, Clyde, by 64 points to win its sixth consecutive SBC title. The Pirates had 187 points and the Fliers finished with 123. Huron was third (111), Edison fourth (101), Margaretta fifth (42.5), Oak Harbor sixth (42), Port Clinton seventh (35.5) and St. Mary CC (18) Port Clintons Brock Moore won the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 8 inches, Cody Smith was fourth in the shot put (49.05.75), as was the 4x100 relay team. The Rockets got a third-place finish from Chris Tabbert in the 110 hurdles (16.16) and Nick Bowlick (200) and the 4x200, 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams all finished in fourth place. Danbury dominated throughout in its non-conference matchup with Bettsville, defeating the Bobcats, 100, to improve to 10-12 on the season. With runners on second and third, Cory Schenk hit a two-run triple to give the Lakers the lead and proceed to get out of a bases-loaded jam while pitching in the fourth inning to help pace Danbury. Lucas Kennedy scored three runs, Schenk tripled and had three RBIs and Brandon Burke and Dalton Chapman each had an RBI. Schenk got the win, allowing no runs on three hits. OLD FORT 10 DANBURY 7 Trailing 7-4 in the sixth inning, Old Fort rallied for six runs in the inning to take the lead and claim victory over Danbury, 10-7. The Stockraiders had three hits in the sixth inning, the key one being a two-run double by Nick Yeakle. Garet Kimmet, Cole Davidson and Brad Heilman added RBIs later in the inning to help Old Fort to the
lead. Dalton Chapman took the loss for the Lakers, allowing six runs in relief. DANBURY 2 CARDINAL STRITCH 1 With the score tied at one in the top of the seventh, Cory Schenk reached on a double and was driven in by Dalton Chapman to give the Lakers a 2-1 lead. Schenk got the win, allowing one run in seven innings of work.

Vendors sought for Farmers Markets

The Oak Harbor Downtown Committee in conjunction with the Oak Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce will be holding Downtown Oak Harbor Farmers Markets again this season at Flat Iron Park. The markets will be held on the fourth Saturday of each month starting in June, and will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The mission of the market is to help sustain the local economy by providing local farmers, bakers, artisans and other vendors an affordable opportunity to sell their goods to local consumers. Organizers are looking for vendors for the Farmers Market in every category. Along with farm fresh produce, farm market vendors can also provide quality poultry products, fresh baked goods, herbs, fresh-cut flowers, all types of plants, fruit, cider, handmade crafts, garden dcor, antiques, art, music, jewelry and gourmet food items. The cost of a booth is $10 per week and if you sign up for all five markets you get 20 percent off for a total cost of $40 for five markets.
