INTRODUCTION

Have you wondered how Egyptian architecture looked like? If you want to find out about their homes this is the power point for you. There may be other pieces of architecture that are more amazing, but the homes are what I find most interesting. I will include a page each for pyramids, the sphinx and obelisks, but I am going to concentrate on homes mostly. 2

PYRAMIDS

Pyramids were the most grand monuments of the Egyptians. Pharaohs and other important figures were buried in the chambers of the pyramids. In other words the pyramids were tombs. To protect the mummy and the treasure inside, there were secret passage ways and tunnels leading to a dead end. There were also traps. One of them was a hole in the dark passage way that robbers really fell in. Around pyramids there were cities built for the workers. After the pyramids were finished, the cities stayed there.

OBELISKS

Obelisks were monuments like the pyramid but a little less grand. Obelisks were made to tell about one persons life and did not have any treasure inside. The only two remaining are at the entrance of the temple at Luxor and at Place De La Concorde in France. Obelisks were large pillars with a square base and a small pyramid on top. The pyramid represents the ground the sun god stood on to create the universe. The obelisks were usually 70 feet tall or taller.

THE SPHINX

The sphinx is a statue with the body of a cat and the head of a man. It symbolizes strength and wisdom. Many people believe it was once painted and some proof is that there are some traces of paint on an ear. Some historians believe that there are secret passages, rooms, and treasure under it. So far there is no proof that it is true. Unfortunately the Turkish shot off the nose of the sphinx for target practice. For pictures go to www.guardians.net/egypt/sphinx.

BUILDING MATERIALS FOR HOMES

The Egyptians had a great source of bricks - the Nile River.

The Nile floods every year leaving behind mud, straw, and pebbles. The Egyptians filled molds with these materials and let them dry to make bricks. These bricks were easy to make and easy to transport. But they were very weak and started to crumble after a few years. Rich people could afford larger, stronger stone houses ,but they were much harder to make.

PEASANT HOME VS. NOBLE HOME

Peasant home Flat roof Made of mud bricks No stairs- only ramps In the country the house could be as big as you want as long as you make it in your free time Have a courtyard Noble home Flat roof Made of stone 25-30 rooms Specialized rooms like family rooms, guest rooms, and bath rooms Doors raised 4 feet above ground No stairs- only ramps 7

LOCATION IS IMPORTANT
The homes, whether they were peasant or noble, were usually next to the Nile. The Nile was their resource provider. Along the river , it was a great place to have farms. At that time, the Nile was a very important transportation hub (it was like an ancient highway) All animals need water to survive. The Nile provided water for them to drink and wash in.

THE IMPORTANT NILE

The Nile was an important geographical place to the Egyptians. It was the only reason that the Egyptians lived there. It gave the people the resources needed to make the homes and to survive.

For example, to make homes you needed mud bricks made of mud, straw, and pebbles. All of these were provided by the Nile when it flooded.

CARRIED OVER
The Egyptians architecture is represented in our modern

world more than you think. Have you been to Las Vegas? In Las Vegas, Nevada, there is a pyramid-shaped casino, (Luxor) which has hieroglyphics all over the walls and its inside is decorated Egyptian style. At the entrance there is one of the only 2 discovered obelisks.

CARRIED OVER
In Washington D.C. you probably have seen an obelisk. It is a monument of one of the most important historical figures in the history of the United States. The capital is also named after him. You guessed it. The Washington Monument is an obelisk.

CARRIED OVER
The most interesting thing to me is the pyramid that the Japanese are planning in Tokyo bay. It will be a huge pyramid 12 times higher than the pyramid in Giza and will be 55 times larger than the Egyptians 45 century old land mark. It is going to be built in the middle of Tokyo bay so it will not compete for space with other buildings. To find out more go to

SUMMARY
Ancient Egyptian architecture is still in todays world and it is for a good reason. Egyptians were great architects. They made huge levers to raise obelisks, created a huge statue, built pyramids, and achieved all this without modern technological advances.
