The key takeaways are that inspection and testing play an important role in quality control during the material procurement process. Several parameters like technical specifications, IS specifications, quantity, packing, marking, sampling, and calibration are checked during inspection. Various tests are also conducted during the acceptance testing stage.
The main points covered for quality inspection include verifying technical specifications, IS specifications, offered quantity, packing and marking as per specification, sampling, marking on samples, and calibration of measuring instruments. Testing is also conducted in the presence of inspectors, and test reports, calculations, and sealing are reviewed.
The main tests prescribed for acceptance testing of transformers according to IS 2026 are ratio and polarity, load losses and impedance, insulation resistance, resistance of winding, no load losses, no load current, voltage, temperature rise, impulse voltage, dynamic short circuit, noise level, and type tests.

Acceptance Test of Transformer The establishment and maintenance of a high standard of both material and workmanship can be only be achieved by continuous inspection during the manufacturing stages and by subsequent testing of a finished product. In accordance with Indian standard 2026 the transformer are subjected the following tests in order to ensure their being electrically and mechanically sound in every respect and also to make certain that they meet the guaranteed performance
The test prescribes are as under Ratio and polarity 1 no out of lot Load losses and Impedance all transformer Insulation resistance 1 no out of lot Resistance of winding 1 no out of lot No load losses No load current all transformer Voltage test all transformer a) Separate source all transformer b) Induced over voltage all transformer. Temperature rise test 1 no out of 100. Impulse voltage test Type test. Dynamic short circuit test. Type test. Noise level test. Type test.
RATIO AND POLARITY TEST The ratio and polarity tests are carried out on every transformer to ensure that the turn ratio of windings is correct and the tolerance as per IS standard is plus minus .5 % of the declared no load ratio. This test is initially carried out on the core and windings before assembly in the tank. The ratio is again checked when the transformer is in its tank and finally when job is finished completely. RATIO AND POLARITY TEST The ratio meter itself is a single phase, double wound transformer, having a constant primary winding and a variable secondary winding. In carrying out the test, the H.V winding of transformer being tested is connected in opposition to the primary winding of the ratio meter, while the L.V winding of the transformer is connected to the terminals of the dial switches though ammeter. A single phase voltage not exceeding 2000v is applied across the primary winding of ratio meter, and the two dial switches are adjusted until the ammeter reading registered zero. A zero reading of ammeter is possible only the polarity of transformer is true otherwise there will be not possible to have zero reading. Load loss test and impedance test. These two tests are carried out simultaneously. The test is necessary to know that losses and impedance are within tolerance of guaranteed value at specified temperature i.e 75 degree centigrade. The test is performed by L.V winding shorted by shunt applying rated current in H.V winding Care shall be taken while these test is carried out. Such as Preferred three wattmeter method. Correctly measured voltmeter reading , this will be calculate percentage impedance at 75 d centigrade. the peak short circuit current is determine from percentage X/R ratio. Thus importance of voltmeter reading is obvious. NO LOAD LOSS AND CURRENT. The test is necessary to know that losses and current are within tolerance of guaranteed value at specified frequency. This test determine quality of core lamination, assembly and level of flux density used. Expected value of watt/kg for 1.6 tesla and 1.69 tesla are 1.3 watts /kg and 1.56 watts /kg Further the following points are important Observe the rise in lo load current with voltage. If no load current in case saturation of core. In this case no load current will suddenly increase near rated voltage.
measurment of insulation resistances For measurement of insulation resistance between LT to earth, LT and H.T, use 1000volt , 2000 M ohms meggar. As per experiences there is no problem in achieving 200 Mohms value at room temp. of these resistance for 11 KV and above windings. Some time for LT and earth resistance is low about 500 Mohms.
However following table is given with temperature for minimum acceptable insulation resistance in M ohms.
Temp in deg centigrad e 20 30 40 50 60 HV 800 400 200 100 50 LV 400 200 100 50 25 MEASURMENT OF WINDING RESISTANCE. It is the D.C resistance of the winding , which is measured across two terminals available at the bushings. The temperature of the windings is taken to be the average of the top and bottom oil temperature. For better accuracy the difference between top and bottom oil shall be minimum. This is the reason for doing this test in the beginning. It is assume that transformer has been under oil without excitation for long time. This time should be at least 3 hours. In case of distribution transformer measurement of winding resistance is normally carried when there is no difference between top and bottom oil temperature. The time of measurement should be noted and used for guidance in carrying temperature rise test. Following points must be noted.
It is important to measure the cold winding resistance and temperature accurately because:
These resistance are used to determine stray copper losses and thereby total load losses. These resistance are used in the temperature rise of windings . For low resistance double Kelvin bridge < 2 ohms and resistance >2 ohms whet stone method may be used. Standard electronic instrument can also used for resistance measurement. The variation between resistance of different winding should not be too much. In no case more than 5%.
Voltage test - winding
The H.V and LV. Winding of all transformers are adequately tested for insulation before leaving the factory. these tests consist of a) separate source test and b ) induced over voltage test. Separate Source Test All the ends L.V windings are connected to earth. The H.V windings are connected to one H.V terminal of testing transformer , other L.V terminal of this transformer being earthed. the primary side of testing transformer is excited from normal supply at any convenient frequency between 25 Hz to 50 Hz. It is preferable to apply this test at the normal frequency. 28 kv for H.V terminals and 3 kv for L.V terminals. Induced Over Voltage est. In this test induced over voltage test, for one minute equal to twice the normal rated voltage of the h.v winding. During this test the supply frequency should be increased by at least 100 % above the normal value in order to avoid an excessive exciting current. The H.V windings are left open circuited, the test voltage being applied to the L.V windings. Temperature rise test. This test is basically to verify the temperature rise of the winding and the oil. Since test is of relevance to the life of insulation, class of insulation, this test is attached lot of importance. As per our AT term we carry out this test one from supply of 100 no of transformer. Few importance points to be noted as under. Minimum tap position as current is high. Shunt shall be of proper size. in the measurement of winding resistance allow sufficient time for reduction of inductive effect of the transformer. Ambient temperature shall be taken accurately. See that there is no wind. Check the current feeding in transformer is correct IMPLUSE TEST Voltage surges have always occurred on transmission systems and these surges, whether arising from lighting or switching. To prevent breakdown equipment must be designed to withstand surges. Standard impulse voltage level for 11 kv dist transformer is 75 kv peak 1.2/50micro seconds wave shape. But DISCOM has asked to pass the implulse having 95 kv peak instead of 75 kv. One reduced level 50 to 75 % of the test level, one full wave at test level, two chopped waves , one full wave.
DYNAMIC ABILITY TO WITHSTAND SHORT CIRCUIT. The verification of the ability to withstand short circuit is to be performed on high voltage winding connected to three phase balanced source and low voltage winding short circuited through current measuring instruments. The current to be supplied is depend on x/r ratio of transformer. Short is for 0.5 secs duration and at 11 kv. The equipment is declared passed if no deviation in oscillograms observed and it passes on all routine test after short circuit test.
