Pregnancy Termination : Abortion Pill
Abortion Pill:
If you wish to have a pregnancy termination and are past 16 weeks pregnant, you may be
eligible for a late medical termination of your pregnancy using a tablet, containing a compound
called mifepristone. This would be effective in terminating your pregnancy over a number of
weeks, where you would visit the hospital to meet with your doctor, who would administer the
tablets. This procedure can be painful, however painkillers are available in order to help, as your
body passes over the pregnancy. Rest assured that your doctor would be available during your
entire treatment, and if any discomfort occurred, to provide aid at all times.

Pregnancy Termination : Surgical Termination Of Pregnancy (STOP)
Surgical Termination Of Pregnancy (STOP)
This method is offered if you are between seven and nine weeks gestation, by request if under
nine weeks and if you are medically unsuitable for a medical termination. Surgical abortions are
available for up to 18 weeks pregnancy.
You will be seen for an initial consultation and counselling by Mr Michael Stafford at Chelsea
& Westminster Hospital, Fulham Road, Chelsea, where you will have a scan, an infection screen
and blood tests. The second part of your treatment would involve a surgical operation where
suction is used to end the pregnancy, whilst the patient is under general anaesthetic, and thus
asleep during the entire procedure. A thin tube would be placed through into the womb, where
the contents of pregnancy would be removed very carefully, via a suction process. The procedure
is very safe, and only takes a few minutes to conduct.

Contraception Advice
Condoms: Condoms are the only type of contraception that can not only stop the transmission of sexually
transmitted infections or diseases, but also prevent pregnancy. Condoms made of latex are generally considered
more reliable, and are thought of as the best means of contraception.
Mirena IUS: A Mirena intra uterine system (IUS) is used for treatment of heavy periods whilst acting to provide
contraception. Before the Mirena IUS is inserted, any infection not caused by your symptoms are checked for using
swabs. If there are infections present, you may continue to use the Mirena IUS through insertion.
Emergency Pill: The Emergency Pill is a type of birth control for women who have had sexual intercourse without any
protection. It is particularly useful if your regular contraceptive fails (such as a condom breaking during sex), if you
forget to take your normal birth control pill or if you have had sex without any protection.
Nexplanon implants: Nexplanon is a small tube that is placed under the skin and contains the hormone
progestogen, and in effect stops the ovaries from releasing an egg, and therefore avoids the chance of fertilisation
occurring. It also causes the mucus made by the cervix to become thicker, blocking the cervix and stopping sperm
from reaching the uterus.
Vasectomy: A vasectomy is a very effective, simple and permanent type of contraception. It in effect stops sperm
from being ejaculated from the penis, without stopping the ejaculation fluid from being released. If you decide to
have children later in life, there is a possibility of having the vasectomy reversed, which can be arranged separately.

Cervical Smear tests
Cervical smears:
The cervical smear test is designed to pick up small changes before any serious issues arise. One in
twelve smears is abnormal, so it is not uncommon to have an abnormal or unexpected result, however
it is extremely rare for any of these resultant abnormality to be cancer.
Nearly all abnormal smears show little more than tiny changes in cells on the cervix (the neck of the
womb).
However it is important to act on these, by manage and being aware of these changes with appropriate
treatments. It is very rare for a woman to develop cancer if they have regular smears and colposcopy
when it is required, and if you believe you need a smear test, please contact 132 Healthwise.

Testimonials
"When I found that I was unexpectedly pregnant, I wanted a someone to talk to who would be sympathetic and
unbiased and who would go through all my options in detail. This is exactly what I found with the team at 132
Healthwise. Although it was a very difficult time, the sensitivity and understanding of the team was remarkable. I
would recommend them to anyone who finds themselves in my situation."
Miss CM, London
"I panicked when I discovered that I was five weeks pregnant. It was a total shock and I wanted to deal with the
problem urgently. I knew that I didn't want to keep the pregnancy, for a variety of reasons, but I didn't know how to
deal with it. Rather than waiting for an NHS appointment, a friend recommended I rang 132 Healthwise. From the
first phone call I was put at ease. I was given an appointment the next day, when I had a scan and saw the consultant.
I had many questions, all of which were dealt with in detail and with sympathy. I made the decision to go ahead with
a medical abortion, which was very straightforward. I had the consultants personal phone number, so I could ring
him at any time, if I had worries or further questions. Nobody wants to be in this situation, but the staff at 132
Healthwise made it as trouble free as possible."
Miss AF, London
"I rang 132 Healthwise as soon as I found out that I was pregnant. I had discussed my predicament with my boyfriend and we
decided that we couldn't continue with the pregnancy for many reasons. We live in Dublin, so we needed to travel to London
to see a doctor and arrange the procedure. Cost was an issue for us, so I was pleased to find that 132 Healthwise offered a
private package which was the most reasonable in London. We were treated with respect by all the staff and the process was
as trouble free as I could have hoped for. I would like to thank all the staff for their sympathy and kindness."
