Environmental studies
.and what it is all about?

Reasons to study
To change the way we view environment.
To create concern for environment.
Clarifies modern environmental concepts
Biodiversity
Sustainable life style
Equitable resources utilization

Environment
Definition :
Environment literally means
surrounding and everything
that affect an organism
during its lifetime is collectively known
as its environment.

Environmental Science
The study of the environment, its living and
nonliving components, and the interactions of
these components
The discipline deals with the social, political,
philosophical and ethical issues concerning
man's interactions with the environment

Multidisciplinary Nature
Environmental studies deals with every issue
that affects an organism. It is essentially a
multidisciplinary approach that brings about
an appreciation of our natural world and
human impacts on its integrity. It is an
applied science as its seeks practical
answers to making human civilization
sustainable on the earths finite re-sources.

Few of the disciplines:

Geology :It is the science comprising the study of
solid earth the rocks of which it is composed, and
the processes by which it evolves.
Computer science: Monitoring our oceans, forests, farms,
rivers, and even our cities is critical to understanding how
to preserve our world and make the most of our natural
resources.
Environmental Economics : It undertakes theoretical or
empirical studies of the economic effects that include the
costs and benefits of alternative environmental policies to
deal with air pollution, water quality, toxic substances, solid
waste, and global warming.

Biology :It is a natural science concerned with the study

of life and living organisms, including their structure,
function, growth, origin, evolution, distribution, and
taxonomy.
Biotechnology :It is the use of living systems and
organisms to develop or make useful products, and it is
usually seen in agriculture, food production and medicine
production.
Mathematical modelling : Scientists use models for
anticipation of, intervention in and understanding of the
natural world; that is, to represent the world for prediction,
control, and for explanation.

Environmental anthropology is a sub-specialty within

the field of anthropology that takes an active role in
examining the relationships between humans and their
environment across space and time.
Ecology :It is the scientific study of the relations that
living organisms have with respect to each other and
their natural environment.
Hydrology: It is the study of the movement, distribution,
and quality of water on Earth and other planets, including
the hydrological cycle, water resources and environmental
watershed sustainability.

Environmental informatics is the science of information

applied to environmental science. It provides
the information processing and communication
infrastructure to the interdisciplinary field of
environmental sciences aiming at data, information
and knowledge integration as well as the identification of
environmental of information technology.
Environmental statistics: It is the application of statistical
methods to environmental science. It covers procedures for
dealing with questions concerning both the natural
environment in its undistrurbed state and the interaction
of humanity with the environment.

Environmental chemistry :An interdisciplinary science

that includes atmospheric, aquatic and soil chemistry, as
well as heavily relying on analytical chemistry and being
related to environmental and other areas of science.
Environmental thermodynamics: It is concerned with
energy conversions and flows. Rather than being confined
to individual machines or wholly natural processes,
however, it is concerned with the interactions of
technology and the natural world. As such it is very much
concerned with human behavior and life styles. Thus,
technological energy flows are involved in their entirety,
from initial production, through consumption, and to
eventual radiation into space.

Why is the importance?

Man and his power to alter the natures course have
multiplied
Enhance usage of available earths natural resources
Increased pollution
Biodiversity loss

We, the human race, is only one amongst millions of

different kinds of organisms that share the planet with

An Engineers

Economic Growth (GDP) vs Environment

Environmental damage increases as a country becomes richer

Where and how did the problem arise.?

Industrial revolution
Green revolution
Mass production
Mass consumption
Mass disposal

Waste Generation
Loss of Biodiversity & extinctions
Climate Change & global warming

Deforestation

Awareness in India
1972-Stockholm convention attended by
Indira Gandhi
Need felt for Institutional frame work
Department of Environment was created.
Need felt for legal/Regulatory frame work
Control & Prevention of pollution Act-1974
Central Pollution Control Board set up
State pollution control board set up

Stockholm Convention
The United Nations Conference on the
Human Environment, having met at
Stockholm from 5 to 16 June 1972,having
considered the need for a common outlook
and for common principles to inspire and
guide the peoples of the world in the
preservation and enhancement of the human
environment,

Few Principles Of Stockholm

Convention
The natural resources of the earth, including
the air, water, land, flora and fauna and
especially representative samples of natural
ecosystems, must be safeguarded for the
benefit of present and future generations
through careful planning or management, as
appropriate.

The capacity of the earth to produce vital

renewable resources must be maintained
and, wherever practicable, restored or
improved.
Man has a special responsibility to
safeguard and wisely manage the heritage
of wildlife and its habitat, which are now
gravely imperilled by a combination of
adverse factors.

Organizations working for Environment

World Wide Fund (WWF)
Centre for Science and Environment (CSE)

Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB)

Wildlife Institute of India (WII)
United Nations Environment Program (UNEP)

Central Pollution
Control Board
CPCB aims to promote cleanliness of
streams and wells in different areas of the
States by prevention, control and abatement
of water pollution, and to improve the
quality of air and to prevent, control or
abate air pollution in the country. Air
Quality Monitoring is an important part of
the air quality management.

World Wide Fund (WWF)

Ensuring conservation of the countrys
biodiversity , major ecosystems and critical
landscapes.
Minimising wasteful consumption and
promotion of sustainable and wise use of
natural resources by all sectors of society
Promoting the active involvement of rural
and traditional communities in the
sustainable management and conservation
of natural resources.

Center for Science &

Environment(CSE)
Established in 1980, CSE works on
environment-development issues in India,
and advocates for policy changes and better
implementation of the already existing
policies. CSE uses knowledge-based
activism to create awareness about
problems and propose sustainable solutions.
