Lesson 4.8 Righting Ship

This document discusses ship stability and the process of righting a ship that is listing. It defines key terms like roll, heel, and list. It describes how to calculate the moment to heel 1 degree based on factors like gravitational moment and ship weight. The document outlines an inclining experiment process used to determine a ship's center of gravity. This involves removing weights, emptying tanks, measuring draft, and using pendulums to measure inclination. The document concludes with describing a righting ship drill conducted semi-annually to train the damage control organization.

DEFINITIONS
ROLL -The action of a vessel involving
a recurrent motion.
HEEL - Semi-permanent angle of
inclination, caused by external
forces.
LIST - Permanent angle of inclination
caused by a shift in the center of
gravity so as to cause G off CL, a
-GM, or a combination of the two.

A ship will heel or list until the Rigting

Moment is equal to the Inclining
Moment

IM = RM
The inclining moment is a force (w)
multiplied by some distance (d)

IM = w x d

IM = w x d

To find the distance X:
Cos = adjacent or X

d
Thus X = d x cos
IM = w x d

IM = w x d x cos

IM = RM
A Righting Moment is the moment that a
ship creates to keep itself upright. It is
also equal to a weight (Wf) multiplied by
some distance (GZ)
RM = GZ x Wf
From Lesson 4.01: GZ = GM x sin
Therefore:

RM = GM x Wf x sin

IM = RM
IM = w x d x cos
RM = GM x Wf x sin
w x d x cos = GM x Wf x sin
w x d = GM x Wf x tan (tan 1o = 0.01746)

MH1o = GM x Wf x 0.01746

IM = RM
IM = w x d x cos
RM = GM x Wf x sin
w x d x cos = GM x Wf x sin
w x d = GM x Wf x tan (tan 1o = 0.01746)

INCLINING EXPERIMENT
Completed upon commissioning, and
following each major overhaul or
shipalt.
It is done to verify the exact location
of the ship's center of gravity (KG).
Basis for updates to Section II(a) of the
DC book and for changes to weight
and moment compensation status

MOB-D-6-SF Righting Ship

Conducted: Semi-Annually
Purpose: To train the damage control
organization in correcting a list.
Requirements: Condition 1 and zebra set.
Liquid loading may be varied to put an
actual list or trim on the ship if desired.

Drill Conditions: One or more compartments

have been flooded or are open to the sea.
Flooding boundaries are established;
flooding is under control. Emergency
patching, plugging, or shoring have been
completed. Correction of the ships list has
been ordered.
Evaluation: As per FXP-4
