    Osteomyelitis is caused by bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus spreading from a local infection to bone tissue. The bacteria enter through breaks in the skin and spread via lymph and blood vessels. This triggers an inflammatory immune response as T cells and B cells are activated, releasing cytokines. If the bacteria are not phagocytosed, the inflammation spreads, damaging bone matrix components and leading to osteomyelitis.
