What is narrative?
In media terms, narrative in the
coherence/organisation given to a
series of facts. The human mind
needs narrative to make sense of
things, thus narrative is an
umbrella term that also covers plot
and story.

Plot - is the narrative as it is read,


seen or heard from the first to the
last word or image.
Story - is the narrative in
chronological order, the abstract
order of events as they follow each
other.

Tristan Todorov (1939-)


Tzvetan Todorov suggested that many narratives (stories) could be broken into
specific stages.
1. EQUI LI BR
IUM the setting is established, key characters are introduced and
BRIUM
the storyline is set up.
2. DI SRUPTI ON - oppositional characters (characters who will play opposite the
key character, either in a relationship, e.g. the hero/h eroine, or in the
conflict, e.g. hero/ villain) appear and the story takes a particular direction.
3. RECOGNI TI ON OF DI SRUPTI ON the lives of characters and events are
interwoven. Tension builds throughout this section, which is oft en the longest.
4. ATTEMPT TO REPAIR DI SRUPTI ON the highest point of tension aft er which
there is a change in dynamic.
5. REINSTATEMENT OF EQUI LIBRI UM - matt ers are sorted out, problems
solved and questions answered.
