INTRODUCTION
To have sustainable growth and social progress, it is necessary to meet the
energy need by utilizing the renewable energy resources like wind,
biomass, hydro, co-generation, etc.
The integration of wind energy into existing power system presents
technical challenges and that requires consideration of voltage regulation,
stability and power quality problems.
The issue of power quality is of great importance to the wind turbine.
Injection of the wind power into an electric grid affects the power quality.
Power quality problems include voltage sag, voltage surge, harmonic
distortions, etc.

The control scheme has a capability to cancel out the harmonic parts of the
load current and maintains the source voltage and current in-phase.
The proposed control scheme supports the reactive power demand for the wind
generator and load at point of common coupling (PCC) in the grid system, thus
it gives an opportunity to enhance the utilization factor of transmission line.
The Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is generally required to
compensate the fluctuation generated by wind turbine
Wind power injection into an electric grid affects the power quality due to the
fluctuation nature of the wind and the comparatively new types of its
generators.
The FACTS Device (STATCOM) control scheme for the grid connected wind
energy generation system to improve the power quality.
The intended result of the proposed scheme relives the main supply source
from the reactive power demand of the load and the induction generator.

GAPS IDENTIFIED
1. STATCOM can be used with Battery Energy Storage
System(BESS) to improve the power quality issues.
2. Fuzzy Logic Controller can be used instead of PI controller to
control the STATCOM.
3. Induction Generator can be replaced by Doubly Fed Induction
Generator for better power result.
WORK TO BE DONE
Developed the complete model in MATLAB for controlling of
STATCOM using Fuzzy Logic Controller.
Validate the model and calculation of Total Harmonic
Distortion(THD) of voltage at different buses and compare the
improvement in THD at different buses by using Fuzzy Logic
Controlled STATCOM.
STATCOM ADVANTAGES
Continuous and dynamic voltage control.
High dynamic and very fast response time.
Requires less space as bulky passive components (such as reactors) are
eliminated.
It can be interfaced with real power sources such as battery to supply active
power.
There are no moving parts, hence requires less maintenance.
High efficiency.
Single phase control for unbalanced loads.
High reliability and availability.
