Mujica Cordano
BIOGRAPHY
Jos Alberto Mujica Cordano was born on May 20, 1934 in Montevideo. The "Pepe" married in 2005
with Mrs. Lucia Topolansky.
Jos Alberto Mujica Cordano, popularly known as Pepe Mujica is a Uruguayan politician, current
president of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay. With a past guerilla, was chosen deputy and senator to
occupy the position of minister of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries between 2005 and 2008. In his
youth, Mujica participated actively in the National Party, where it came near Enrique Erro. His mother
was born in Carmelo, where his parents, vine growers, bought five hectares in Colonia Estrella to
grow vineyards. His father was a small farmer who was bankrupt just before his death in 1940, when
Mujica was six years old. On 1 March 2005, President Tabar Vzquez appointed Mujica as Minister
of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (Mujica's professional tray was in the agricultural sector).
When he became a minister, Mujica resigned as a senator. The political ideology of Mujica has
evolved over the years. He took office on 1 March 2010.

2
Government
Under Mujicas leadership the Uruguayan economy continued to prosper, posting consistent growth in
GDP and per capita GDP while maintaining low unemployment rates. In June 2012 Mujica proposed
that the government legalize and distribute marijuana to cut off revenue to drug dealers. hen, in
November, a bill was introduced in the House of Representatives outlining a framework for
government regulation of marijuana production, sales, and consumption. In October 2012 Uruguay had
become the first South American country to allow abortions up to the 12th week of pregnancy, and in
May 2013 Mujica signed a bill that made Uruguay the second country in Latin America to
legalize same-sex marriage. Mujica was constitutionally prohibited from seeking a second, consecutive
term, but, in much the same fashion that he had ridden into the presidency on the goodwill generated
by the Vzquez regime, he was able to return the favour, as the popularity of Mujicas rule paved the
way for Vzquezs triumph over the National Partys Luis Lacalle Pou (the son of Mujicas opponent
in 2009) in the November 2014 presidential runoff election.
