SYNONYMY
Definition

Synonymy is the relationship

between two predicates that have the
same sense (the phenomenon in
which he words that sound different
but have the same meaning).
For examples:
Stubborn = obstinate, brigand = bandit, mercury =
quicksilver.

Sometimes synonymy is defined as similarity of meaning, a
definition which is vaguer than ours. The price we pay for our
rather strict definition is that very few examples of synonymy, so
defined, can be found. But the strict definition is useful as an ideal
and we will still use it and assume that relatively good instances of
synonymy are possible for the purpose of furthering our
investigation into how to describe sense relations.

NOTES!
Types of Synonymy
Perfect synonymy
This type is hard to find because there is a little point in a dialect
having two predicates with exactly have the same sense.
For examples: Airman = Pilot, car = automobile

Near synonymy
This type is express the expressions that are more less than similar
but not identical in meaning.
For examples: Conceal = Hide, Purchase = Buy, Wide = Broad

Partial synonymy
Car = Vehicle

HYPONYMY
The Power of PowerPoint - thepopp.com
Hyponymy is a sense relation between predicates (or
1 something longer phrases) such that the meaning of the
predicate (or phrase) is included in the meaning of other.

Hyponymy is a sense relation. Another term for sense,

2 prefer by logicians, is intention, a term deliberately
chosen for its implicit contrast with extension.

3 Hyponymy is defined in terms of the inclusion of the

sense of one item in the sense of another.

Hyponymy is the state or phenomenon that shows the

4 relationship between more general term and the more
specific instances of it.

EXAMPLE : RED - SCARLET

SCARLET is the hyponymy of RED, because SCARLET is kind of RED). RED is more general in
meaning that its hyponymy SCARLET, which is much more specific in the kind of color it
describes.

The sense of ANIMAL, is included in
the sense of COW.

If we draw a diagram of the extensions of COW & ANIMAL, the

inclusion relationship appears the other way around.
