Yarn Twist

• Twist is the spiral arrangement of the fibres around

the axis of the yarn.

• The short staple fibres are always twisted together

during the process of spinning to produce a yarn.

• The twist is actually given to bind the fibres together

as a yarn and to give yarn strength.

• The amount of twist not only directly affects the

strength of the yarn; it also affects lustre, abrasion
resistance, handle, absorbency and flexibility.
Direction Of Twist
• Fibres can be twisted together in the clockwise
or anti-clockwise

• clockwise direction to form yarns. Yarns are

twisted in the clockwise direction for "S“ twist

• Anti clockwise for "Z" twist. The "Z" twist is

employed in a majority of the spun yarns used
for fabric construction.
