Twist is the spiral arrangement of fibres around the axis of yarn, which is given during spinning to bind fibres together and strengthen the yarn. The amount of twist affects properties like strength, luster, abrasion resistance, absorbency and flexibility, with most yarns using a 'Z' anti-clockwise twist direction for fabric construction.

Yarn Twist
• Twist is the spiral arrangement of the fibres around
the axis of the yarn.
• The short staple fibres are always twisted together
during the process of spinning to produce a yarn.
• The twist is actually given to bind the fibres together
as a yarn and to give yarn strength.
• The amount of twist not only directly affects the
strength of the yarn; it also affects lustre, abrasion resistance, handle, absorbency and flexibility. Direction Of Twist • Fibres can be twisted together in the clockwise or anti-clockwise
• clockwise direction to form yarns. Yarns are
twisted in the clockwise direction for "S“ twist
• Anti clockwise for "Z" twist. The "Z" twist is
employed in a majority of the spun yarns used for fabric construction.
