Extended Cell Range
For Ocean & Rural Scenario

› This extended cell

radius feature can be
used in rural areas
where coverage is
limited due to high
site to site distance,
and is implemented
in low band coverage
such as L900, due to
better propagation
loss.
Equipment for Extended Coverage
Specification and detail Baseband – Radio - Antenna
Antennas used for deployment of extended cell range must be selected based on site-specific requirements:

•In most cases, it is recommended that 18 dBi antennas with a half-power beamwidth of 65° be used.

•When deployed at sea, the antennas are mounted as high as possible, in order to resist the effect of the
Earth's curvature. However, this may also create coverage holes for areas near the antennas. In this scenario,
suitable antennas must be selected to avoid coverage holes. In addition, antennas with smaller surface areas
are recommended, to resist the ocean wind, which also reduces the wind resistance on the tower or pole
where the antennas are mounted.

•In open areas, vertically polarized antennas have better performance than other types of polarized
antennas. If wide cell coverage is required, vertically polarized antennas are recommended.

•Non-RET antennas can be used for scenarios that do not require tilt adjustment.
Feature Description

In principle, this feature allows UE propagation delay to be more than 15 km, and in order to work requires
a preamble format RACH that supports cell range above 15 km, i.e preamble format 1, 2, and 3. The
count is as follows:
 OBJECTIVE

The ultimate 4G experience for your

Connected digital life
Introduction

Background :
Nowadays, mobile communications networks cover most of the inland areas, but remote
areas such as at sea, or in the desert, or grasslands, have poor coverage due to site acquisition
problems. It is difficult to find suitable site locations at sea. Site deployment as usual in the
desert or in grasslands (where traffic is light) requires excessively huge investment.

Objectives :
This feature increases cell coverage to meet communication requirements in rural and remote
areas such as at sea, in the desert, and in grasslands, significantly decreasing the cost to
deploy sites in such areas.

 SUCCESS CRITERIA
KPI To Be Monitored
OSS KPI & Expected Result:
1. Accessibility (RRC success rate, ERAB success rate, RACH success rate) – slightly degraded
2. Retainability – slightly degraded
3. Payload & number of RRC & active users - increased
4. DL quality: CQI, DL MCS, DL cell / user throughput – slightly degraded
5. UL quality: UL MCS, UL RSSI, UL cell / user throughput- Propagation delay
6. PDCCH AGG8 - increased
7. TA8 (14.4KM~30KM) - increased

Drive Test:
• DT far distance - before no service, after active can do DL/UL load service.
• Samples of service area - increasing

 LESSON LEARNT
Lesson Learnt | Key Finding Issue

Site antenna height and power is basic condition for far coverage.
Relay trial site CJR372, 20W, from ground to site 183-158=25m, total antenna height is 60+25=85m.
DT test can serving 17KM
This case proved if antenna height and power enough, extend coverage feature working fine.
 DEPLOYMENT RECOMMENDATION
Deployment Recommendation
› This extended cell radius feature can be used in rural areas where
coverage is limited due to high site to site distance, and is
implemented in low band coverage such as L900, due to better
propagation loss.

› Coverage level (RSRP) will be the same but more users are
allowed to access cells. To make this feature more effective,
there is a good thing if it is equipped with coverage
enhancement on the DL and UL side, namely: UL TMA for UL
coverage gain and Higher PA Power for DL coverage gain

› For the evaluation itself, maybe it can be done with the format
1 preamble that supports up to 28 km and the radius cell is
raised gradually, for example the first cell radius is 18 km, 20
km, then 25 km.

› DT verification will be very difficult unless you can find 1 island

site, and try to do a coverage test to what extent.

› RSI / PRACH Config Index Also need to check or configure so

that the preamble is not collision around it or in the other hand
we differentiate the PRACH config index if we want to be
simpler.
