History
Founder of Niles, OH: James Heaton (1806)

➔ Big in iron and steel industry. Heaton was the first owner of an iron ore processing plant within the state. Niles was
first known as “Heaton’s Furnace,” then “Nilestown,” after an editor named Hezekiah Niles. By 1842, the town
officially became “Niles.”
➔ The iron industry boomed unti the depression, around 1873, when the town’s biggest firm, James Ward and Co.
closed
➔ In the early 1900s, new companies began to open and the population nearly doubled, growing from 7,000 to 13,000.
Such companies included the Niles Iron and Steel Roofing Company, Niles Glass Works of the General Electric
Company, and Ohio Galvanizing.
➔ Rough times in history can be contributed to the depression, but also several natural disasters; including heavy rains
- which lead to leadto flooding. The town has also experienced earthquakes, and tornadoes.. Nearly 500 died in the
1913 flooding, and the damages were over $3 million.
➔ Still considered a center for production of steel.

Urban Renewal
➔ In 1976, the Federal Urban Reneweal Program began to renew the downtown Niles area, after years of several
disasters (fires, floods, tornadoes, etc.) destroyed much of Niles structure.
➔ Some street and highway reconstruction provided better access to downtown buildings, shopping centers, and
egress for fire departments going out on call. The Niles Historical Society mentions on their website how the
infratructure enabled the town. State Street was moved closer to Mosquioto creek , providing additional space
between Main Street and East State Street - making way for more firms, shopping centers, etc.

Emergency Preparedness
Trumbull County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency
Management:
● Trumbull County 911 center has the ability to set off sirens and some of the communities in that
area. The city sounds thiers when the whole county does.

Here are some tips in mind when creating emergency plan:

○ Create a list of addresses and phones numbers for the places where your family
spends the most time along with family members’ cell phone numbers and work
numbers. Each family member should have a copy of the list and a copy should be
placed in your disaster supply kit.
○ Identify meeting places in your neighborhood (in case of a house fire) and meeting
places outside your neighborhood in case you have to evacuate.
○ Select an out-of-town relative or friend to be the “family contact person”. After a
disaster, it is often easier to make a long distance call than a local call. If
separated, family members should call the “contact person” and tell him or her
where they are. Everyone must know the contact’s name, address, and phone
number.
○ Know what to do if authorities instruct you to shelter in place or evacuate.
○ Practice and maintain your plan by reviewing and updating it every six months or
with any major changes in your family.

Waddell Park Pool
NILES, Ohio (WYTV) - It's been nearly five years since Niles' Waddell Park Pool closed. Since then,
residents have been trying to get it reopened but it doesn't look like it's going to happen anytime soon.

They've applied for and received grants, and tried to get the community involved. Now they're angry
because Niles Parks and Recreation Director Robert Burke said it's not likely.

Waddell Park Pool in Niles sits vacant, filled with rainwater, thousands of leaves and even a dead animal.
