Chiral/Asymetric carbon:
Carbon atoms have four valences.
It having all four valances satisfied by four
different groups called chiral carbon.
b
Chiral Carbon CHO
a C d CH3 C OH
H
c
Pseudo Chiral Carbon:
If a carbon is situated b/w two chiral carbons
called pseudo chiral carbon.
Isomer:
Many carbon compounds which have same no
of atoms in them but have completely different
structures.
These are the element have some no of atom
but arranged differently.
Isomer is the term that originated from the two
Greek terms iso same ….. MerosParts
These are the compounds which have same
molecular formula but different structural
formula. So having different properties.
Stereoisomer's:
These are the isomers in which the molecular
formula is some but the arrangement in space is
different as in above example.
In Carbohydrates same molecular formula but
different in the position of –OH group on one or
more of their asymetric carbons.
The no of possible stereo isomers of a
compounds depends on the no of chiral carbons
atoms.
2n n no of chiral carbons atoms
open chain of glucose 2/4 = 16 isomers
Close chain of glucose 2/5 = 32 isomers
Epimers:
These are the isomers different n the position of
the hydroxyl group at only one asymmetric
carbon.
Examples:
D glucose
D galactose
Are epimers
Enantiomers:
These stereoisomer's are mirror images of each
other.
Non super imposable
Mirror image
Required minimum 1 chiral carbons
Having different physical properties
