DEFINITION OF HYGIENE
What is Hygiene ?
Hygiene is the conditions or practice conducive to maintain health and preventing disease especially through
cleanliness. Washing hands, coughing into your elbow, and regular house cleaning are all part of good hygiene.
Good personal hygiene is important for both health and social reasons.
It entails keeping your hands, head and body clean so as to stop the spread of germs and illness.
Personal hygiene benefits own health and impacts the lives of those around, the social benefits associated with
personal habits must also be considered.
Handwashing: The first place to start with your personal hygiene routine is your hands. We use our hands
constantly during the day, touching many different surfaces, shaking hands with people, eating our meals, or even
playing at school. Naturally our hands are the biggest carriers of germs. Simplest ways to ensure that our family is
safe from illness is to practice good hand hygiene. It can keep illnesses such as cold, cough , flu and gastroenteric.
Washing our hands frequently with soap and water will help us to stop spreading of germs.
We should wash our hands: Before eating or cooking food . Before picking up a baby. After visiting the
washroom. After coughing or sneezing, or being in contact with someone who is ill. After being in contact with
animals
Bathing ; Shower every day using warm water and soap, considering showering twice a day when the weather is
warm, daily bathing is an integral part of good hygiene because bathing with soap and warm water prevents body
odor's because it kills the odor causing bacteria.
THE IMPORTANCE OF PERSONAL HYGIENE
Skin infections such as athletes foot can be reduced by carefully washing and drying the affected areas daily.
After being out all day, get home and take a warm shower using a soap to remove any harmful germs from the
body
Hygienic Clothes : Germs and dirt can cling to your clothes, wash the clothes you wear after each use so that
these germs and impurities are removed. This is especially important if you have been exposed to an ill family
member or friend. Personal hygiene is not difficult once a personal hygiene routine is in place, it becomes a habit
in no time.
Dental Care : Caring for your teeth and practicing good oral hygiene wards off gum disease, bad breath, tooth
decay and many infections. Always brushes your teeth twice daily after breakfast and before bed, Store your tooth
brush in a clean, dry place and replace it regularly.
CONSEQUENCE OF POOR HYGIENE
● Poor personal hygiene habits, however, can lead to some minor side effects, like body odor and greasy skin. They
can also lead to more troublesome or even serious issues. For example if you don’t wash your hands frequently, you
can easily transfer germs and bacteria to your mouth or eyes.
● Food poisoning.
● Gastroenteritis
● Diarrhoea caused by campylobacter
● Pneumonia
● Trachoma
● Skin infections
● Bad breath.
● Missing teeth
● Disheveled hair and clothes
HYGIENE TIPS TO KEEP YOU FRESH AND CLEAN-SMELLING
● Wash behind your ears – wash behind your ears. It prevents “old person smell”
● Wipe until the paper is white – on your last wipe, there should be no brown on the toilet paper
● Switch your pillowcase every couple days to avoid acne
● Floss to prevent bad breath
● Scrape your tongue to prevent bad breath
● Use hydrogen peroxide and saline water as mouthwash
● Sneeze on the inside of your elbow
● Clean your bellybutton
● Wash between your toes
● Men should sprinkle baby powder on their balls
● Men should trim their armpits and pubes
● Men should wipe the tip of their dick after peeing
