THE LEGEND OF MAGAT RIVER
(TWO VERSIONS)
First Version: Magat was a handsome and
strong-willred youth who saved a lovely
maiden bathing in a stream from the
clutches of a python. He proposed marraige
to the woman, who consented on condition
that Magat would swear not to see her at
noon. One day, Magat could no longer
contain his curiosity and broke into his wife’s
seclusion. In place of his wife, he saw an
crocodile, who turned into his wife. “You
broke your promise” lamented the woman.
Having said this, she slowly turnes once
more into a crocodile and died. After
burying his crocodile-wife in his front
yard, Magat drowned himself in the
same stream where he first ispied her.
Over time, the stream grew into the
mighty Magat River. It widens and
grows, it is said, because Magat wants
to claim the remains of the wife he
buried in the heart of the town.
Second Version: From the town of
Bambang comes the origin of Magat
River, which is formed by the
confluence of four rivers: the meet,
the Abuat, the Matunu, and the
Nambuhatan. A popular tale in
Aritao narrates the story of a
mermaid in the Magat River. This
mermaid was always heard washing
clothes in the river at the midnight.
For fear offending the mermaid, the
people in the river left their houses to
look at her. One day, a girl got sick after
taking a bath in the river. Many folk
doctors tried to cure her but noone can
ascertain the causes of the illness, until a
folk doctor from another palce arrived.
The healer talked to the child to find out
what she did in the river.
The child told him that while bathing, she
caught a fingerling, palyed with it, and
when it died, she throw it again back in
the river. To appease the mermaid who
was affected by this accident, the healer
prepared an offering consisting of male
and a femal white chicken, riced cooked
in coconut milk, tobacco, and betel nut
chew all of which he took to the river at
nighttime. Days after the child slowly got
well again.

married another well-known
writer, Edilberto K. Tiempo.
Well-known for her poem,
short stories and novels, Dr.
Tiempo and her husband
also used to teach at the
Siliman University.
• Edith was born on April 22, 1919 in San
Nicolas, Bayombong, Nueva Viacaya
• Her parents are Salvador T. Lopez, an
auditor for the government, and Theresa
Cutaran.
• During her chilhood, Tiempo’s family
frequently had to move from one province
to another because of her father’s different
assignmenrs and postings

Their breaths would rise hot ang
pungent as the lemon rinds
In their cups and sniff at the odors
Of his past like dogs at dried bones
behind a hedge,
And he would live in the whispersand
locked heads,
Wheeling around and around and
turning back was where he started:
The turn of the pasture, a swift streak
under a boy’s running;
The swing, up a few times and he had
all the earth he wanted;
The tower tress, and not so tall as he
had imagined;
The rocking chair on the porch, you
pushed it and it started rocking,
Rocking, and abruptly stopped. He, too,
stopped in the door way, chagrined.
He would go among them but he

would not tell, he could be smart,
He, an old man cracking the bones of

his embarrassment apart.

NOTABLE AUTHORS
FLORENTINO HORNEDO
• Born in October 16, 1938 in Batanes
• He was born to Leo Hornedo and
Bienvenida Hontomin
• Hailing from Savidug, Sabtang, Batanes,
Hornedo obtained hid BSE from the
University of Santo Thomas in 1961. He
received his Master in English and
Philosophy from St. Louis University in 1966
and 1972 respectively and his Ph.D. In
Literature from UST in 1977.
• He also completed a post doctorate on
History and Political Science from UST
completed in 1985-88 and as trainings in
Journalism and Cultural Anthropology
• As a writer, Dr. Hornedo has authored 13
books in Philosopy,Education, Culture, and
History. In addition, he has been editor of Ad
Veritatem, a journal of research at the UST
Graduate School, Ivatan Studies Journal, a
Graduate School Research Journal at the
Saint Dominic College of Batanes.
He was a prolific writer, researcher and author of journal
articles, monographs and books such as Laji: An Ivatan
Folk Lyric Tradition (1979), Pagmamahal and Pagmumura
Essays (1997), Culture and Community in the Philippine
Fiesta and Other Celebrations (2000), Taming the Wind:
Ethno-Cultural History on the Ivatan of the Batanes Isles
(2000),The Glitter of Gold in Batanes Cultural Heritage
(2000), The Favor of the Gods: Essays in Filipino Religious
Thought and Behavior (2001), Ideas and Ideals: Essays in
Filipino Cognitive History (2001), Pagpapakatao and Other
Essays in Contemporary Philosophy and Literature of Ideas
(2001) and Epics and Ballads of Lam-ang’s Land and
People(Bago-o Traditional Literature of the Bakun and
Amburayan River Valleys) (2006).
He was a full professor of the Ateneo de
Manila University, professorial lecturer at the
Graduate School of the University of Santo
Tomas and a visiting professor in 20 university in
Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, South
Korea, Taiwan, China and the USA.

• He had a rich style and deep understanding
of human nature- qualities
• He wrote anout the history of the English
Language in the Philippines
• He finished high school in 1908 and at the
age of 15, he entered Philippine Normal
School. However, due to the insistence of his
father, he transferred to the University of the
Philippines where he started to white for a
school organ.
• Some of his works are, “Sonnet on
Sympathy”, “Pagan Madonna”, “The Rural
Maid”, “On a Rose”, “Lost Frienship”.
