Joanna Preston is an Australian-born poet, editor and
freelance writing tutor who lives in a small rural town in Canterbury, New Zealand.
It came from a snippet of trivia – that the surname
‘Singh’, often taken by Sikh men at adulthood, literally translates as ‘Lion’
“ It wasn’t meant as a variation on the Beauty and the
Beast myth, although I guess it shares many of the same undercurrents”– Preston. .. Preston presents the theme of a dysfunctional family which involves violent behavior, poor communication and lack of empathy.
The poet speaks directly to the reader,
adopting a persona of a female character who falls a prey to ‘The Pride of Lions’.
Lion is a metaphor used for men specifically in
a sikh community. Since, it is a sikh religous symbol called the 'Khanda', with two lions on each side and an eagle on top with two flags. The poem uses extended metaphors to depict a male’s behavior. It also symbolises authority and suppression, suggesting a strong sense of hierarchy upon his opposite gender- sexual hypocrisy/ gender biasness Thepoem appeared in : The Best Australian poems 2005 Les Murray(editor), Melbourne. 2005 anthology pg.141.
