died with a great reputation for sanctity

Dominic Founder of the Order of Preachers

But what was of infinitely
greater importance were the
holy lives of his family
Blessed Mannes first saw the light of day in the
ancestral castle, Caleruega, Old Castile in 1155.

From the supposed birth year of Bl. Mannes, it seems that he

was about 15 when St. Dominic was born.
Bl. Mannes had
already begun his
studies for the
priesthood before
St. Dominic’s birth.
Blessed Mannes
was one of the first 16 disciples of St. Dominic.
What does it show about the values and virtues of
Blessed Mannes?
A virtuous man of God…

He knew not
the meaning of
HUMILITY pride or
jealousy
When Saint Dominic established his Order, Mannes was
among the first to place himself under his standard, and to
receive the habit.

He was among the “sixteen” zealous men whom God selected as

the foundation stones on which to build the Order of Friars
Preacher.
In August 15, 1217, the chosen little band took their
religious vows on bended knees before Dominic.

Blessed Mannes received his vows in

a spirit of self-sacrifice.
As A Zealous Missionary
Of The Faith…

In 1207, Dominic and Mannes

toiled hand in hand for nearly ten
years that they might free the
Church of southern France from
the poison and turmoil of heresy,
and restore it to its former peace
and beauty.
Not once in all this time did
Mannes take a vacation, or pay a
visit to his native land because he
had DEDICATED HIMSELF TO THE
SERVICE OF GOD.

He felt that his place was

where religion needed his
attention so badly.

HIS ZEAL WAS TIRELESS; HIS

EFFORTS UNCEASING.
He was a splendid
preacher. He intermingled
prayer with his
sermons and
instructions.
But more than his
eloquence, HIS
SHINING VIRTUES
AND MORTIFIED
LIFE yielded a
stronger influence for
good.
His final days… Mannes became sick
while engaged in his work
of piety.

He died at the Cistercian

monastery of San Pedro
near Caleruega about the
year 1235.

He was buried in the

Church of Saint Peter
attached to the Cistercian
monastery.

In 1831 under the name of Gregory XV1, beatified him,

and granted his office and mass to the Order of
Preachers.

Blessed Mannes
