DEVICES
LITERARY DEVICES
• Are common structures used in writing.
• Used to convey meaning.
SIMILES
• Are one of the most commonly used literary
devices; referring to the practice of drawing
parallels or comparisons between two or
unrelated and dissimilar things, people, beings
places, and concepts.
• Similes are marked by the use of the words ‘as’
or ‘such as’ or ‘like’
Ex.
• Ethan is as tall as giraffe.

• His hair was spiky like the


top of pineapple.
FORESHADOWING
• REFERS TO THE USE OF INDICATIVE
WORDS/PHRASES AND HINTS THAT SET THE
STAGE OF UNFOLD AND GIVE THE READER
HINT OF SOMETHING THAT IS GOING TO
HAPPEN WITHOUT REVEALING THE STORY OR
SPOILING THE SUSPENSE.
• FORESHADOWING USED TO SUGGEST AN
UPCOMING OUT COME OF THE STORY.
Ex.

• A character in a story comments on the


weather, and says, "I think a storm is coming."
This can signify a physical storm or a
metaphorical storm that is coming in the story.
• A pipe is going to burst, but before it does, the
author writes a scene where the family notices a
small dark spot on the ceiling, but ignores it.
RHYME SCHEME
•Is the practice of rhyming words placed at
the end of the lines in prose or poetry.
•Rhyme scheme refers to the order in
which particular words rhyme.
Ex.
• I think I can never see
Something as free as a sea.
• Twinkle, twinkle, little star,
How I wonder what you are.
Up above the world so high,
Like a diamond in the sky.
• Roses are red
Violets are blue
Beautiful they all may be
But I love you
REPETITION
•Is just the simple repetition of a word,
within a sentence or poetical line, with no
particular placement of the words. This is
such a common literary device that it is
almost never even noted as a figure of
speech.
Ex.

• If you think you can do it, you can do it.

• “O Captain! my Captain! rise up and


hear the bells;
Rise up — for you the flag is flung — for
you the bugle trills…”
OXYMORON
• Is significant literary device as it allows the author to
use contradictory, contrasting concepts placed
together in a manner that actually ends up making
sense in a strange, and slightly complex manner.
• Is an interesting literary device because it helps to
perceive a deeper level of truth and explore
different layers of semantics while writing
Ex.
• We’re busy doing nothing.

• a living death

• sometimes you have to be cruel to be


kind
METAPHORS
•A metaphor is a comparison of two
different things, without "like" or "as."
It makes a description more interesting
or powerful.
Ex.
She is an angel.
Her eyes were diamonds.
He has a heart of stone.
