TECHNIQUES IN
PAINTING
DRY BRUSH
• A painting technique which a paint brush that is
relatively dry, but still holds the paint being used.
SGRAFFITO / COMBING
• Comes from the Italian word “Sgraffire” means “to
scratch”.
• This techniques involves scratching through a layer
of still-wet paint to reveal what’s underneath.
WET-IN-WET
• Adding paint to a wet layer.
OVERLAY / GLAZING
• a thin transparent or semi-transparent layer on a painting
which modifies the appearance of the underlying paint
layer.
• Glazes can change the Chroma, value, hue and texture of
a surface.
IMPASTO
• From the Italian word “dough or paste” often used with
palette knife. It provides texture; the paint appears to be
coming out of the canvas.
MODELING PASTE
• also called as “molding paste”
• A fantastic way to add texture to your paintings.
• A thick white paste that is primarily used to add texture and
relief to paintings.
DRIPS / SPLATTERS
• It is a form of abstract in which the paint is dripped
or poured on a paper or on a canvas.
STENCIL / STAMP
• A technique that reproducing a designs by passing
ink or paint over holes cut in cardboard or metal.
GLOSS / MATTE
• For the finishing.
SCUMBLING
• Painting technique which a layer of broken or
scratchy color is added over another color.
MASKING
• Is the use of materials to protect areas from
change, or to focus change on other areas.
SOFT-EDGE VS. HARD EDGE
• Soft edge – is a blurred or blended.
• Hard edge –shows a distinct and even line between
colors or strokes.
