They can be broadly classified in to three types.

communication monitors.
• System support programs provide routine service functions to the other
computer programs and computer users. Ex. Libraries, utilities, job
accounting etc.
• System development programs assist in the creation of application
programs.

• Device Drivers: They are computer programs, which facilitate
the interaction of high-level computer programs with the
hardware devices. Drivers also provide interrupt-handling
mechanisms.
• Linkers: A linker is a program that takes the objects generated
by a compiler and combines them to form a single executable
program.
