Action Research & OD

m
INTRODUCTION
Dual purpose of action research:
Making action more effective.
Building a body of scientific knowledge around
that action.
Action refers to: Programs and interventions
designed to solve problems and improve
conditions.

2
A Process and An Approach
Action research is a process, an ongoing series of
events and actions.
Definition:
Action research is the process of systematically collecting
research data about an ongoing system relative to some
objective, goal, or need of that system;
feeding these data back into the system;
taking actions by altering selected variables within the
system based both on the data and on hypotheses; and
evaluating the results of actions by collecting more data.

`
Action research also known as an approach to
problem solving.
Example: Herbert Shepard, 1969, conducted
an action research on a group of oil
refineries.
Highlighted the relations among goals
(objectives), planning, and action in a diagram.

Examples of AO in OD

Gavin - conducted a comprehensive survey

feedback program in a mining company of
approximately 400 employees.

(
Genesis of OD in the company
In the midst of phenomenal growth in business, the
company faced a stiff competitive environment in
Indian and international markets.
Under these circumstances, the need was felt to
enhance the organizational effectiveness and to gear
up the organization in its totality to meet new
challenges.
When an organization grows, any informality present
is replaced by a stricter code and so the culture of
the organization also undergoes a change.

K
The consultant carried out an in-depth study
discussing with a cross section of staff on an
individual basis with the purpose of gaining
an understanding of the relative roles ,
responsibilities, their interactions with other
key personnel.
Committees were formed and a preliminary
report was prepared indicating widespread
changes in the organization.

m
It was also suggested that OD interventions
could be considered for the following reasons
1. To aid the process of change in culture ƛ
from the culture of a knit compact group to
the culture of a large group aspiring for
greater heights.
2. While striving for greater results, to develop
and maintain organizational health.
3. To sharpen role effectiveness and possibly
build teams at some strategic points,
although a good team spirit is discernible
throughout the organization.

The OD process : A Diagnostic study
An organizational diagnostic study to
understand the organizational efficiency,
efficacy and motivational levels.
The following are important functions in the
task :
a. Implanting function
b. Alternative generating function
c. Process facilitating function
d. Resource building function
e. Self liquidating function
