PREFABRICATION AND

SYSTEMSBUILDING
This section gives recommendations
regarding modular planning, component
sizes, joints, manufacture, storage, transport
and erection of prefabricated elements for use
in buildings.
TERMINOLOGY
• BASIC MODULE - The fundamental module
used in modular co-ordination, the size of
which is selected for general application to
building and its components.
• NOTE - The value of the b & z module has been
chosen as
-100 mm for the maximum flexibility and
convenience.
-The symbol for the basic module is “M”.
Definitions
• COMPONENTS - A building product formed
as a distinct unit having specified sizes in three
dimensions.
• INCREMENTS - Difference between two
homologous dimensions of components of
successive sizes.
• MODULE - A unit of size used in
dimensional co-ordination.
MODULAR CO-ORDINATION
• - Dimensional
• co-ordination employing the basic module or
a multimodule.
• NOTE - The purpose of modular coordination are:
• a) to reduce the component size produced,
and
• b) to allow the building designer the the greater
flexibility in the arrangement of components.
PREFABRICATED BUILDING
• - The completely as sembled and erected
building, of which. the structural parts consist
of:
• prefabricated individual units or assemblies
using ordinary or controlled materials,
including service facilities; and in which the
service equipment may be either prefabricated
or constructed in-situ.
UNIT
• - Building material formed as a simple
article with all three dimensions specified,
complete in itself but intended to be part of a
compound unit or complete building.
• Examples are brick block, tile, etc.
Materials for Prefabrication
While choosing the materials for prefabrication, the
following special characteristics are to be considered:
• a) Easy availability;
• b) Light weight for easy handling and transport, and
to economize on sections and sizes of foundations;
• c) Thermal insulation property;
• d) Easy workability;
• e) Durability in all weather conditions;
• f) Non-combustibility;
• g) Economy in cost, and
• h) Sound insulation.
The materials used in prefab
Components can be various and the modern trend is to
use concrete, steel, treated wood, aluminum, cellular
concrete, light weight concrete, ceramic products, etc.
However, this section pertains to prefab concrete
elements.

Plans and Specifications –

Complete set of drawings as specified in Part II
Administration shall be submitted to the
Authority for approval.
• Such drawings shall describe--

the elements of the structure or assembly

including all required data of physical
properties of component materials.
MODULAR CO-ORDINATION,
ARCHITECTURAL TREATMENT & FINISHES
• The planning grid in both directions of the
horizontal plan shall be:
• I) 3 M for residential and institutional buildings:
• 2) for industrial buildings: 15 M for span up to 12
m.
• 30 M for spans between 12 m and 18 m. and
• 60 M for spans over I8 m.
• The centre lines of load bearing walls shall
coincide with the grid lines:
COMPONENTS

The preferred dimensions of precast elements shall

be as follows:
• a) FLOORING AND ROOFING SCHEME –
• 1) LENGTH - Nominal length shall be in multiples of
3 M;
• 2) WIDTH -Nominal width shall be in multiples of I
M; and
• 3) OVERALL THICKNESS – Overall thickness (that is,
the thickness of structural flooring units plus in-
situ concrete decking) shall be in multiples of M/4.
Precast slabs or other precast structural flooring units:

• 1) LENGTH - Nominal length shall be in

multiples of 3 M;
• 2) WIDTH -Nominal width shall be in
multiples of I M; and
• 3) OVERALL THICKNESS – Overall thickness
(that is, the thickness of structural flooring
units plus in-situ concrete decking) shall be
in multiples of M/4.
• BEAMS ,I) LENGTH -Nominal length shall be in
multiples of 3 M;
• 2) WIDTH -Nominal width shall be in multiples of
M/4; and
• 3) OVERALL DEPTH -Overall depth of the floor zone
(that is, from soffit of the beam to the top of in-situ
decking) shall be in multiples of M/4.
• COLUMNS
• 1) HEIGHT-Overall height (that is, floor to floor or
the clear height) shall be in multiples of 1 M for
heights up to 2.8 m; and for heights above 2.8 m.
it shall be in multiples of 2 M; and
• 2) LATERAL dimension or diameter of columns
shall be in multiples of M/4.
• WALL THICKNESS - The nominal thickness of
walls shall be in multiples of M/4.
