Dance
What is
Dance?
It is the expression of
one’s emotion through
movement disciplined
by rhythm.
The word dance was came
from an old german word
“danzon” which means “To
stretch”.
It is an integral part of
life itself.
Primitive man made
dancing the expression
of every kind of emotion.
There was no ancient
civilization of which we
have record that did not
know dancing.
The art of dance is the only art
form whose sole necessary tool
for expression is the human
body.

Creative rhythms are actually for
children in the elementary grades.
These activities are sometimes
called fundamental rhythms. Or
natural dances.
Folk/ethnic dance is a cultural art
form handed down from generation
to generation. It communicates the
customs, beliefs, rituals, and
occupations of the people of a
region or country.
Social and ballroom dance is a
social gathering with the more
formal atmosphere than the
simple and informal parties in
which the recreational dances are
the usual forms.
Recreational dance includes
dance mixers, square dance,
round and couple dances.
Many of these dances have
simple patterns and
combination.
Creative dance is the highest form of
dance. It is the end-product of
exploration and improvisation of
movements as the dancer or the
choreographer expresses his feelings
or emotions, ideas, and
interpretations.
According to Douglas
Nierras, there are two
classifications of
Dance:
Interpretative dance
Dances that are meant to be
interpreted for performances and
staging. Dance literatures and
signature basic steps are already
inherent to these dances which
serve as identifying steps to the
dance.
Creative Dance
Dances that are created out of two
approaches, the elemental approach
and creative approach. These dances
are highly improvisational in nature
considering the different elements
necessary in the creation of dance.

Body awareness
The movement concept of body
awareness defines what your body
can perform. What shapes it can
make, how it can balance, and the
transfer of weight to different parts
are categories to develop challenges
that add variety to movement.
Space awareness
In terms of moving, it is where your
body moves. Your body moves in self-
space and general space, in different
shapes and directions, at different
levels, through different ranges, along
different pathways, and in relation to
objects and other body parts.
Location is the area where
your body moves.
Self-space is a limited area when
you move in stationary or fixed
base. It is all the space that the
body or its parts can reach
without traveling away from a
starting location.
General space is an unlimited are
where you move from one place to
another. It is all the space within a
room, gymnasium, an outdoor
teaching space, or a boundary that
the body can penetrate by means of
locomotion.
Direction is the line along in which your
body moves. It is the dimensional
possibilities into which the body or its
parts move or aim to move.
Levels are
positions with
reference to
height
Pathways are lines of
movement. The path
created by the
combination of various
directions
Extensions are ranges or sizes of
movements of the body or its parts
in space and the distances from the
center of the body that the parts
reach to carry out a movement.
Effort
The use of energy to do quality
movements. This has
something to do with how the
body moves. It can be in terms
of weight, flow, and time. You
should learn how you could
move the body.
Time is the duration,
speed or pacing of
your movement
Force is the weight, strength
or energy you give to the
movement.
Flow is the
progress, facility
or
appropriateness
of your
movement.
Interrupted flow
(bound) stops at
the end of a
movement or part
of a movement.
Sustained flow
(free) involves
smoothly linking
different
movements or
parts of
movement.
Relationships
The connections between or
among people, other bodies, and
things when you move. It defines
with whom or with what your
body moves. It gives meaning to
the interaction between
individuals and their environment.
