QUESTION

During a camping trip you notice that water is

discharged from a high reservoir to a stream in the
valley through a 30-cm diameter plastic pipe. The
elevation difference between the free surface of the
reservoir and the stream is 70cm. You conceive the
idea of generating power from this water. Design a
power plant that gives the most power from this
source. Investigate the effect power generation on
the discharge rate of water. What discharge rate will
maximize the power production?
OUR SOLUTION
Assumptions :
 Laminar flow
 Re in circular pipe = 2000
 Temperature = 20°C
 µ = 10^-3 kg/m s
 Incompressible fluid

Calculation :
Re = DVρ
µ
V = Re µ

= 2000x10^-3 kg/m s = 6.67 x 10^-3 m/s
0.3m(1000kg/m^3)

Q = VA = 6.67 x 10^-3 m/s (π) (0.3m/2)^2 = 4.715 x 10^-4 m^3/s

ṁ = Q ρ = 4.715x10^-4 m^3/s (1000 kg/m^3) = 0.4715 kg/s

PE = g z = 9.81 m/s^2 (0.7 m) = 6.867x10^-3 kJ
E = ṁ x PE = 0.4715 kg/s(6.867x10^-3 kJ)
= 3.238 x 10^-3 kJ

Assume efficiency=100%
Efficiency= W W= efficiency x E
E = 100(3.238 x 10^-3 kJ)
= 0.3238 kJ

P = W x ṁ = 0.3238 kJ x 0.4715 kg/s = 0.1527 kW

2) P = Wṁ , ṁ=Q ρ,
P= WQ ρ
Therefore, we can conclude that when the pressure
increase, the discharge rate (Q) also increase, provided
W and ρ is constant.

3) As the efficiency assumed is 100% , so the P calculated

is the maximum power generated by power plant.
Hence, the discharge rate calculated is 4.715 x 10^-4
m^3/s.
