Learning
goals
1. What are microplastics?
2. How does plastic and
microplastic get in the ocean?
3. What does microplastic and
plastic do to animals?
4. Microplastics and us.
5. What can you do?
Plastic turns into microplastics when it goes into land fill and doesn’t
What are break up fully. Pieces of that plastic that broke down from bigger pieces,
microplastics? are now microplastics. They are about the size of half of an ant. It is
about 5mm. Microplastics are mostly found near water, the ocean, and
beaches.
How do microplastics
get in the ocean?

o Like we said before, microplastics are

very small pieces of plastic.
o It will move along with the gentle breeze.
o Glitter is a type of microplastics.
o When you blow glitter, it will easily fly up.
The same think happens with
microplastic.
What does microplastic and
plastic do to animals?
Once microplastic and plastic gets in the ocean, it can do lots of harm
to the animals in the ocean:
1. Some animals might mistake it for food and eat it.
2. Birds may get caught in plastic and they will not be able to leave
to get food.
3. Turtles, seals, dolphins, and many other animals may choke on
the plastic that they tried to eat, especially sea turtles who might
mistake it for jellyfish.
4. Some of the smaller animals (including zooplankton, fish, crabs
and many others) may also eat the microplastics if not the bigger
pieces.
Now we know that fish and other animals may eat the microplastic
that get in the ocean, where does that leave us?
Microplastics and Us
• We have made more than 8 billion tons of plastic,
that is 28 fully grown elephants!
• There’s a chance that there was microplastic inside
what you recently ate.
• If you eat fish or any other sea food, there is a
chance that they also have microplastic inside them.
• There is also microplastic in some types of bottled
water, both in the water and the bottle itself!
• We eat about 5 grams of plastic a week, which is the
same as eating a credit card! Of course it affects our
health. Eating plastic doesn't let us grow stronger or
taller!
What can you do?
There are quite a lot of things you can do.
1.Use glass bottles or reusable bottles instead
of plastic water bottles.
2.Use reusable containers, jars, bags and cups
rather than single use plastic.
3. Use less water when showering or bathing
(filling your bath half full). This seems so
unimportant and you might be asking, how does
this help?
Shampoo and bodywashes all have microplastic in
them and when you wash it off, it will go down the
drain and eventually into lakes and oceans.
4. Find alternatives like using a metal straw instead
of a plastic straw.
Fun(and partially scary) Facts !!
1. Just the plastic in the ocean kills about 1 million animals in the ocean
per year!

2. Gum is made from plastic!
3. One person using a reusable bottle will save 100 more plastic bottles
every year!
4. There is a species of plant in the Amazon forest that can live off plastic
(they can live just by eating it)!
5. About two million plastic bags are used every minute.
6. A garbage truck of plastic enters the ocean every minute!
We challenge you
to…

Use less plastic than you normally do next

week. Save the plastic you do use and take a
picture of it at the end of the week.

Be sure to send the picture of the plastics

you used at the end of the week to your
teacher for house points.
Alphabet Scavenger Hunt!
Games!! We are going to have a few letters on the screen, and you will have about 1
minute to come up with an item made of plastic or that has microplastic
inside it that starts with the letter. You can write your item in the chat.
