Romeo

Juliet
Creative

Prompt
Hi Ms. Tessari,

I am writing an email to you to argue that Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is a

very remarkable work of literature and it deserves to be included in the English
curriculum. Educating Romeo and Juliet to students is a great way to introduce
teenagers to Shakespeare whose plays and poetry are a strong part of our cultural
identity. His works are among the greatest contributions in shaping modern
English and making it the world’s language. His influence is not only felt in our
language. His humor is expressed in his words, plots and characters continue to
inspire much of our culture and wider society. The “Romeo and Juliet” is often
chosen for school English classes over other Shakespeare play on the assumption
that students will be able to more readily identify with characters who are their
age.
By including this to the English curriculum, students will take away some
important life lessons and will be exposed to different concepts and ideas in
which they can relate to. Some of these ideas are issues about love, hate, life,
death, suicide, murder, gang warfare, peer pressure, parental pressure, and
societal expectations. This “Romeo and Juliet” of Shakespeare is most especially
directable to teenagers because nowadays, teenagers like to get themselves
involved in so many dramas such as dating someone who they only knew for a
few days, getting into affrays, committing suicide for foolish reasons, having sex
desire, disobeying their parents, peer pressure, and more. The passionate love
story of Romeo and Juliet will teach teenagers how their rushed decision could
impact the course of their life. Romeo and Juliet’s early and reckless decision of
marriage leads them to each other’s death.
This tells teenagers that if they carelessly decide to act stupidly like taking a
random drug, making sexual intercourse, dropping out of school, running away
from home, their life, and their future can be easily turned really bad by just
making those decisions. If that happens, they can never go back just like how
Romeo’s and Juliet’s death cannot be reversed. Most teenagers as of this day
found themselves to be in a relationship. They let their emotions get over them
easily similarly to how Romeo and Juliet think that they have “fallen” deeply in
love with each other. Peer pressure is another reason for teenagers to date very
early because everyone’s in the same age pretty much doing it. Kids, nowadays,
date as early as 12 or even 11 years old to the point that it is becoming a part of
our culture now to date at a very young age.
At the beginning of the play, the Montagues and the Capulet’s servants pick a
This particular scene shows teens some possible outcomes of their actions such
as disturbing people, break people’s property, and getting into jail. Teenagers
that find themselves in depression or the lowest point of their life often lead to
committing suicide. Family problems, low self-esteem, bullying, and more could
be the reason behind this. But any of this was never enough reason to end their
life. Likewise, Romeo and Juliet’s romantic love should never be enough reason
for them to commit suicide. Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is indeed a great
play and there is such a wealth of wisdom, humor, drama, passion, relatable
characters, sex, and violence, which one could find it more than just fantastic
entertainment. That’s why teenagers should be given the opportunity to learn
what the play has to offer by learning it at school.

This symbol holds a few meanings. The dagger symbolizes death and
feud. It represents the feud between Juliet’s and Romeo’s families. The dagger
also represents the times in which Juliet encounters death; it appears: with the
friar if he cannot think of a way to end her betrothal to Paris; with her alone in
her room just before she drinks the vial; with her in the tomb. The heart
represents the love in which she has for Romeo. The purpose of this symbol:
heart with a dagger, is to represent how love links to feud. Juliet and Romeo’s
love story would’ve worsen the feud between their families if both households
had known about their relationship earlier. Another purpose of this symbol is
to represent the interconnection of love and death. Juliet’s love for Romeo was
the root of her death. Same goes for Romeo. Their love for each other was the
root of each others’ death.
